help with selecting drillng on G-3
« on: December 16, 2007, 03:31:12 PM »
I have a G-3 Gryphon coming, thanks to a trade.  Anyway I am wondering how I should lay this out.  I am a lefty with a slightly inverted high track, a high pin is my main option.  My average speed is 16 mph using qubica.  I'm not sure of my rev rate but I get a good amount of hand into it.  I was thinking that the coverstock will help get the length so I figured I'd use a 60*, 4"-4 1/2" pin to pap, probably a 20* angle to the val.  I haven't thrown one and am unsure what to expect.  What do you think?  My Ogre Pearl and Immortal pearl are drilled with the pin above the ring finger and the cg slightly kicked to the left.  The FMG has the pin next to the ring finger and the cg kicked to the left an inch to inch and a half

I have a G-3 in the pipeline, too, and after talking with local G-3 users and staffers I will get a 1-2" pin ball and set it up about pin at 4.5" from PAP (see my profile for more details) I am still unsure about the CG position, but it will be either stacked or only slightly swung out. The pin will end up under the fingers, anyway, because anyone who used one with a high pin told me that the ball became pretty flippy and condition specific.

tommymo,

Where is the G-3 supposed to fit in your line-up?

Scotts33,
It's tough to say . . . I have not had much success with my Immortal Pearl, so it will probably take the place of the Immortal until I can get it right.  I would say in between the FMG and Ogre Pearl.

Being a lefty....diz's suggestion of pin next to or even under is probably OK.  Depends on how much length you want out of it.  Does the IP over flare and you are losing punch?

The older one, I have is pin over bridge 5" pin to PAP but what I use it for is broken down heads and an inside ball.  I'm going to order another one as I have used my older G-3 quite a bit.  It still flares around 4"-4 1/2"'s with a weaker 5" layout and hits very well.

It will kinda depend on how you want to use the G-3.  I use mine on an inside ball and use the Ogre Pearl as my outside in the track ball.

My Vis. line up would look like this normally this would be the progression I would use these balls.  Notice the G-3 is way stronger than my SS or Pearl but I'd use it as a deep inside line ball so I need the strength to carry better.  I could add B/G Centaur or Solid Ogre in there depending on conditions.  I have some older Vis. stuff that I don't use much.

FMG 4" pin to PAP
Ogre Pearl 4 1/4" pin to PAP
SS 5" pin to PAP
G-3 5" pin to PAP

Yeah the Immortal is over flaring and losing punch,  I took it to 2000 grit abralon and figured I could use it in tournaments, or when I needed something a little longer than the FMG and stronger than the Ogre Pearl.  The only reason I was thinking of a high pin is because I am an inverted hightracker

Tommymo,

I noticed you mentioned you would have the G-3 set between your Frankie and your Ogre Pearl....in my opinion, your G-3 should sit outside of your Ogre Pearl.

The G-3 is one, if not the most, skid/flip ball they've produced in their lines to date.  Sure the Immortal flares alot, but the cores are completely different and the reaction and hitting power of the G-3 down the lane is better than the Immortal.

I believe that you will be fine with the layout you figured, 4 1/2 at 60, I would maybe even go as far as 75 degree on your drill angle.  The G-3 at stacked (90 degree drill angle) can be a bit touchy, but kicking the CG a little will help get the ball into it's roll a little better.

What are the layouts on your FMG and OP?  What surface do you currently have on these balls??
