Frankie May question(s)
« on: December 19, 2006, 04:57:59 AM »
Hi there,

I am thinking about getting a Frankie May Gryphon, and I have 2 questions about it:
1) Am I correct that it is a solid reactive ball? I found no hint at pearl material, but I'd like to be sure?

2) How well does the coverstock respond to surface changes? The ball comes at 400 grit OOB, which makes it probably suitable for much/long oil - I am planning to use/prepare it for medium conditions, maybe light carrydown after some games on oilier but ridden shots and worn-out sport shots in league/tournament. I think about drilling it with the pin above my ring finger (4.5" from PAP, mabe a little more) and CG stacked (details about me in my profile), plus get its surface to 1.500 grit wet sanded or 2.000 Abralon. Any experience or comments about this?

Thank you very much for replies, thoughts an experience with this ball beyond the reviews.

Best regards!

Me makes 3!!!  I love mine.  I have mine at 4000 abralon, pin at 4 1/2, cg stacked and a small weight hole.  Cover is VERY versatile.

Dizzy,

A-1) Yes, this is a Solid Reactive

A-2) This is a very versatile ball utilizing the Abralons, however, there are mixed reviews with polishing this ball.

I currently have two in my arsenal:

Ball 1: 1000-wetsand -- Control Layout -- PIN under middle finger, CG kicked at 15 degrees -- 5 1/2 PIN to PAP -- This is a great tournament ball that I use at USBC Nationals and various sportshot conditions.  The layout allows me to play deeper on shorter patterns because of the length that can be created from the layout and the recovery from the surface.  Also, on longer patterns I can play up the outside with tremendous recovery from the backend.  This layout also handles carrydown very well because of the delay in loss of axis of rotation.

Ball 2: 1000-wetsand -- Control Layout -- PIN up and slight right of ring finger, CG kicked at 45 degrees -- 3 3/8 PIN to PAP -- This is a great overall ball that does have a tendency to burn up quickly if it encounters shorter patterns and/or the dry area too quickly.  However, this ball is great on the fresh and on heavier/longer oil patterns because of the energy the ball carries to the pocket.

I would venture to say a 4.75 or 5 PIN to PAP would work well, and you may want to go with the 15 degree layout since you have a slower ball speed.  The choice is entirely up to you but you may even go my route and drill up two with different layouts and see what happens.  I do plan on using Storm #2 very lightly on my 5 1/2 ball because of the drier conditions I've been running into the ball seems to still be a little stronger in the middle than I would like.

Best of luck and if you have questions, feel free to PM me or email me.

Thank you all very much for your input. I'll try to get one - solid recatives with symmetrical cores seem to become sparse these days, and a Visionary ball is a true "look what's that?" around here

I think I will take mine to 2.000 grit Abralon or hit it OOB with Rough Buff. I think it will be a good ball - Michael Schmidt looked good with a Frankie May in 2005 AMF World Cup in Malaysia, the ball appeared very controllable.

    Best regards!

Ah, I finally got it: my Frankie May Gryphon arrived from overseas, and it is probably the only one in Germany!

Looks sweet. Took it to 1.500 grit, because I want to use it on medium conditions, and the shine makes it a real pretty thing! Ah, can't wait to have it punched up next Tuesday and try it out. Review will be in progress soon

Again, thanks anyone who helped on this one!

Had it drilled yesterday: Ball came with a 2.25" pin, 3.07 ounces top weight. Ball is at 1.500 grit sheen now and for medium condition use (the coverstock feels way tacky with this fine grit surface!) my pro shop operator set the ball up with the pin under the ring finger and the CG stacked, I guess pin to PAP is roundabout 4.5". I am eager to use it, but have to fetch it from a friend who took it for me to the pro shop for drilling.

    Let the review session begin...

...and, hell, what a nice ball. Tests are still in progress, but my FMG proves to be a very good ball. Very easy to control, and with my setup a good medium condition choice. It responds very well to speed and release changes and gives a wonderful feedback from the lane - I have not played a ball before that was so easy to handle. O.K., it IS a simple ball, but its performance is just impressive.

Turned heads yesterday at ma house league where I used it for a 157-243-217-237 series on fresh medium lanes( I "only" have a 180 average right now). 1st game was a little fight with adjustments for stone 10 pins, but then... wow!

Turned some heads from players who did not even know Visionary, and the ball received positive expert feedback for its nice and stable delivery in the back end.
