My partial message to Visionary:
I finally got that Immortal Solid punched up. I used pin placement B, 4†from my axis, with the pin below the ring finger. We placed the vmb at 45*, or approx position 3. A weight hole is placed on a line from my center of grip, thru cg INSIDE my val. The finishing side weight was 5/8ths pos and ¾ thumb weight. The ball flares a TON, which I expected, but it doesn’t hook nearly as much as I expected. I’m sure your thinking, another idiot that doesn’t understand when aggressive balls roll out. I’m fully aware that the ball may have been burning up, so I moved in. Normally, I can’t get anything short of aggressive particle to square the pocket inside of ten at this house. Even with my rev rate, I normally bump outside the oil line. It moved in alittle more, but not much. I moved further in and it was DOA. The best look I got was 10-5 and carry was extremely suspect, as the ball appeared to be deflecting at entry.
The reply:
Andrew,
Based on the layout you described, my first reaction would be the ball is burning up and dying. With the pin below your ring finger this produces and earlier roll combined with 3/4 oz thumb will make it roll even sooner. With the amount this ball flares combined with the earlier rolling pin placement and thumb weight - I'd say it's trying too hard too early in the oil where you can't see much reaction and then when it hits the dry outside or backend it doesn't have much shifting left to do. Also, the 45* layout for many people can produce a hook/set type reaction. My first thought would be to try polishing it and see if the added length gives you more pop on the back. If so, you're definitely burning up too soon. Then you can either leave it polished if it works OK that way, or redrill it to retain energy and pop on the back. If you need to redrill it, I would put the pin above the fingers and keep the cg a lot closer to grip center than what you originally have. Try the polish first as that may be enough or would at least show if it's just burning up too soon without needing much work or expense.
