Slate Blue Pin Axis
« on: April 25, 2007, 09:28:16 PM »
I have a SBG which is drilled 5 x 4 pin above ring finger.
This ball on burnt heads is way too strong.
I was thinking about a pin axis drill with CG towards grip centre.

Have any visionary experts tried this with a SBG, and what was the outcome.

My PAP 5 3/8 amd 1/2 down. High rev rate ave speed 16 to 17mph.
The ball is 15 lb 2.75 pin, can't remember TW but it was not to high.

I am looking for this to be a total control ball with smooth arch.
Cheers

Thought about it for a laugh, but with inverted track it will flare all over the fingers.
And it will be too strong.

The problem is with a pin down drilling you would want a bit of head oil and lanes with stronger / aggresive right area and back ends to allow the ball to recover enuff to carry.  Burnt heasds will cause a ball that is drilled to roll early, roll even earlier and therefore hit weak.  You can not move left and open up the lane because that drilling is not designed to do that.  If they are truly burnt, drill a ball with pin at least 6 away and keep it around finger height.  I have a toxic with pin in middle finger and it is long and angular enuff to carry.  Or drill a Neptune or milder ball that flares very little.

MaidenheadBandit,

Is it too strong, as in it hooks too much, or as in it hooks too early??
Different people mean different things.

Theory, as far as I have learned,:
A urethane, pearlized or not, will hook earlier than resin on dry lanes, but one uses it because its backend is less andmuch more controllable on dry lanes, which helps balls hook as much as they do.

Pin on axis on a SBG will make it read the lane even earlier, but will cut down on the overall hook.

Charlest

You are correct, this ball is reading the lanes (dry heads only) very early.
Up against an old blazing inferno it was 5 feet earlier sudden change in direction then rolled flat, almost controllable but very weak.

I was looking for a ball that was smooth with a controllable arch.

I have just been to my driller who has suggested pin on track above index finger MB on thumb, or further towards track. (6 1/2 x 5 ish drilling)

Any thoughts
Cheers

I got decent length from just placing the pin above the ring finger. Mine was slightly too much towards the PAP. Above the center of the bridge should be good, if your PAP is somewhere near average.

I'm not sure I'd feel completely safe using such a weak drill as a 6.5" x 5", with this ball. While the core is not a total weakling, I think it can't even be described as medium (RG 2.59, Differential 0.038). You may be killing it entirely with such a drill. May I suggest pin above the middle finger, for about a 6" pin-PAP and CG around grip center? Your high revs should give this a good reaction.

Next time around -
For whatever it's worth, the Blue/Green Centaur, I have found to be a better overall ball and much more versatile than the SBG. It gets more length than the SBG and is harder hitting (for me). The cover is a very weak solid that is very adjustable (I have tried 1000 grit, 2000 grit, 4000 grit  and polished.); it is a very even rolling ball.

Thanks Charlest,

I won't be seeing my driller untill Wednesday, 6x5 will probably be the final decision. Pin above and between fingers.
