List of z spin visionary balls?
« on: June 02, 2015, 12:02:51 AM »
Just wondering if anybody happened to have a list of the z spin balls that visionary has produced.  I very well may be redrilling a couple of my older visionary pieces and was wondering if I need to drill them for z spin or not.  I have an AMB Immortal Solid, an AMB centaur Solid, New breed solid and pearl, and also was looking into buying a used gladiator and gladiator pearl...  Really just wondering though if anybody has taken the time to put together a list.  It would be a really nice thing to have for future reference.

I thought that there was a semi-list in one of the threads on the z-spin balls or in one of my emails.  Did not have it in emails but I did find one with some info on it.

When I emailed Jason at Visionary about the mass bias of Z-spin balls, this is my email and his reply which may answer your question:

Hi Jason,

I remember reading the articles in BR about the Z-spin VBP balls.  If I
remember correctly, they said that putting the mass bias close to the thumb
would be the strongest (that would be using a Pro-Sect thru the pin and CG
and then using the mark 6.75 over).  That would be for the New Breeds,
Mixed Breeds, and Gladiators, I believe.

Where would the mass bias be placed on the other older balls like the AMBs?

It's actually the exact opposite.  Z spin balls have the mass bias directly between the two PSA points, and if you want a strong drilling, you should put the mass bias closer to your PAP, which puts the PSA point near your thumb.

The Mass Bias on the Mixed Breed is marked with a V.  To locate the PSA points, simply put the Pro Sect on the ball with the 0" mark on the pin.  Run the middle rib down to the V, and the PSA points will be on the two corners of the Pro Sect.  This should be 6 3/4" from the pin, and 6 3/4" from the mass bias.

Now, while the Spartan and New Breeds are Z spin, they are very mild asymmetrics.  The intermediate differential on those balls are only in the .004" to .005" range, which means that you can treat the balls as symmetrics if you would like.  The Mixed Breeds have an intermediate differential of .015", so they definitely need to be treated as a z spin asymmetric.

The AMB's are Y spin asymmetrics, so the PSA and mass bias are in the same location.  On these, you would put the mass bias pin (small locator pin) in or around the thumbhole to make it as strong as possible.

Keep in mind, that if you take a strong assymetric like the mixed breeds or the amb's, most house conditions do not require a really strong layout.  Putting the highest RG axis (PSA point) in or near the thumb will cause the ball to flare A LOT, and often times will cause the ball to roll much to early for todays house conditions.

Hopefully this helps,

What I dont understand is why doesn't visionary put out videos explaining what z spins are, how they get drilled differently etc.
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]
*Now Testing* IQ Ruby, Renevant, another IQ Tour solid
Coming soon...???

I do agree I wish visionary would post a video out there explaining z spin, but at the same time I understand how busy the wonders family has been these last 3-4 years.  And I think it has been fairly well documented on how you properly drill up a z spin ball on here.  Stitch, I've seen your review in the past and its a very good explanation of how to drill up a z spin.  My problem is just knowing which balls are z spin and which ones aren't haha.  I guess my new breeds really aren't that strong of mass bias... but all I know is they were nothing like the balls I expected them to be.

The pearl was just a dud.  I expected the thing to get down the lane and just take off on the backend (drilled it 5x5 stacked) ball got down the lane alright... but then it tried to roll a bit early, and then just didn't have any pop on it... it honestly rolled a lot like my label drill violet gargoyle.  I've tried it on multiple lane conditions and the reaction is always dismal, so I plan on redrilling that one.  My

New breed solid... I love the way it rolls... but it hooks less than a lot of my stuff... and get it on any kind of oil, and it doesn't have a chance...

AMB Centaur, rolls early I drilled it 4x4 stacked, I wanted it to be aggressive... and you can tell it rolls really early.... and if there isn't enough oil... then it loses all its energy... that's fine, I expected that... what I didn't expect is when I finally come across a heavier volume pattern for the ball to continue to try and roll early... but then never actually grab the lane.

Anyway sorry for the long winded response here, Just trying to figure out what I want to do with my problem childs... What can I say, I loved the entire gargoyle line, and I really wanted to match up with some of the other "higher end" stuff they had... and its just not matching up with the drillings I've been using.

I thought I would like the Gladiators and Spartan but did not like the reactions on the original layouts.  After reading some of the articles here about the z-spins, I had my Spartan and Pearl Gladiator re-drilled like the z-spins and had a better reaction out of them.

I think the list of the z-spins would be:  Gladiators, Spartan, New Breeds and Mixed Breeds.

Not sure about the Immortals, somewhere I read where someone posted that they were z's but I did not see that verified.  From memory, I thought they were similar to the AMBs.

Here are some links from this site about the z-spins.

I think that list is Correct.   And from what I have gathered from Jason is the degree of Z spin on the early balls is not as much as the MB balls.

Jason has told he he will never produce another Z spin ball as it seems to be to much hassle for drillers not familiar with them.

In essence using the DA drilling method:

The Drill angle should be from 0 (on the pap and strongest) to 40ish ( weakest/longest)

You should use longer pin to pap distances ( 4 1/2 - 5 1/2)

By the time the MB crossover had arrived Jason put drilling instructions in the boxes.  My MB solid was poo poo on the first drilling because I did not do it right, even tho i researched the hell outta it.

The pearl and the Crossover were much better.
