Crimson Ex.

I am thinking about picking up a Crimson Ex.  What do you guys think of this drill pattern on it?

I am looking for something to push down the lane and recover late.  If you guys think this ball is too weak for that please let me know.  I have heard this ball is strong for a pearl...true?

Stats:
PAP 5 1/2 right 1/2 up
350 rev rate

This is just to help in making a ball layout diagram, not a layout suggestion.

Use the Showcode button, number 7 when you are in the Reply Box, to make your layouts in.  Example:

  o                      o

 0 0        or        0  0
                             x
     .                    .

  0                     0

This will allow you to keep your symbols in the proper spacing, otherwise, a lot of times the symbols end up lining up on the left side of this box.

I have a Crimson Ex drilled with the pin at the 1:30 position slightly above the ring finger with the cg kicked right of the center of grip about 2 inches.  This ball is strong until it sees carrydown.  Even though this is a strong ball with a low rg (2.46?), with the pearl cover, it just simply does not like longer patterns.  I use mine on a 42 foot pattern THS and even with my rev rate (540 rpm), I am still throwing the ball only 16 mph in order to get a decent backend reaction.  YES, the core is low and revs up in the midlane, but with the pearl cover, it can squirt a little on carrydown.  This ball works best on patterns 34-38 feet with fairly clean backends.  I tried this ball on a 32 foot pattern and the ball simply checked up way too fast.  FYI:  My Crimson is 400 grit wet sand with Storm 2 polish over that.  Typical house patterns, this ball is a definite favorite of mine.  On longer patterns, use something with particle in the cover and on shorter patterns, use something higher rg that will get down the lane cleaner.

Andrew,

I agree with TWOHANDS. I had one a long time ago, with a 4x4 drilling pin under the ring finger and it still went LONG. Pin over the ring is going to go LONGER. YOo better have short oil and clean backends, then this ball will turn unmercifully hard.

Personally I don't think you need to place the pin over the fingers to get length in spite of the low RG core. The cover sort of overwhelms the core; it is very sensitive to oil out of the box, WHEN I USED IT. To reduce this sensitivity, you might try sanding it to 600 grit, then re-polishing it lightly. I did not do that (didn't have the knowledge) when I had mine, when it first came out.

Once you get this ball to roll and get near the pocket, its power was high, as good as it gets, but it has to hit dry.

Thanks for the info.  Phatdon has a similar drilling on his CE, and it doesn't hit as hard as the first one he had.  I think it is b/c it is lacking the backend pop due to the high rg drilling.

I will probably go something alittle closer to pap.  Maybe 4 x 4...instead of 5 x 4

Thanks,
andrew

AG,
Mine is drilled 4x4, and it has plenty of power on the right condition. I like to use it from an inside line when the normal outside line is breaking down. The early rev keeps it from squirting, and it turns hard when it hits the dry.

I'm not sure that the CE is your best bet if you want something to "push" and "recover late." The CE is effective because it revs early. The low RG sets it up to turn hard as soon as it hits the backend. Other balls with higher RG's will be better at retaining their energy on the shorter patterns. The CE can push down the lane and recover late because it is a pearl, but its core is not designed to, so it requires a pretty specific pattern to do so.

Thanks, so it is similar to the B'wick Inferno<--low rg, strong pearl.  My inferno is drilled 4 1/2 by 3 1/2, it is extremely flippy on the backend.  I don't need that reaction.  I am still open to suggestions.

agroves,

If you are looking at for something to push then you may want to consider the Green Gargoyle.  This ball drilled with a 4x4 or a 4'1/2x4 drilling will give you that push and pop you need.  If you want to go stronger than that on the backend then the G-3 or AMB Centaur is the way to go.

Not sure but I believe more honor scores have been shot with the Crimson than any other Visionary ball.

I liked mine on carrydown but I had it scuffed then Storm Step #1 buffed hard to recover.

How about:

This would roll earlier and smoother.  What do you guys think of this?
