Medium House Condition Ball
« on: December 02, 2009, 02:43:58 AM »
What are fellow Visionary users....using for a THS wet/dry ball?  Thinking of re-tooling some of my Visionary equipment.  Doing a weight change experiment now.

Ogre Pearl
Gladiator Solid
Ogre Solid
other Vis. balls?

I prefer solids for benchmark type reaction ball but Ogre Pearl is one of those pearl arcing pieces that can be benchmark. Hence I discount New Breed Pearl and Gladiator Pearl for the most part.  New Breed Particle Pearl is OK at OOB P2000 bit strong for what I see also have tried it at 1500 polished Storm Step #2 and P4000.  More surface is rolly for me reads mids earlier than Ogre Pearl at same surface P2000 same type of drill.

I am also using a B/G Centaur more in the dry but reaction at times can be iffy and if I shift....do a major right move one zip code to the right playing down and in can use Ogre Urethane in the dry...also can be iffy if carry down present.

House I bowl at is 14 year old Bruns ProAnvilane 1st generation. Surface/lane topography seems to be wearing on right side because they don't tend to put enough oil across the lane to protect it.  Bowl 5 man after shift in front mixed 3 man Wed./Thurs. 4 person teams.  Normally play 13 at arrows to 7-8 moving left as we go.  I've been using Ogre Pearl have to adjust hand position normally up back to start to carry 10.  Gladiator Solid is OK but a bit strong unless moving deeper.  I use Pearl Cell (I know the horror) weak drilled pin under middle Mb shifted out on my VAL for later moving in.

Just thought this would be a good topic for discussion for house bowlers.

Hey Scott,

Maybe you can tweak the VAL angle on the OP to get it to either back off once it moves off the dry to allow you to play closer to the bank or go the other way with it and see if you can get more kick out of it to help you open up the middle. Just a thought.....

For me Scott, it really depends on who we are bowing as that's really the more of the why we'll see such a change in the conditions.  When we are bowling one of those teams where all are using plastic and have no clue where the ball is going, you can be guaranteed I've got either the NB Solid, Ogre Particle or the NB Part Pearl with me.  That's a start.

As the night goes on, I might try and combat the wet/dry with something stronger, but usually.....I will move right and go to something a little longer as I am really trying to stay out of the mess everyone else is dealing with.

That's just me though.

Ken,

Think I'd go the other way with my VAL angle....moving in even with adding more axis rotation/side roll I can still leave ringing tens.  Even at P2000 more surface I get same kind of 10 pin reaction.

I do agree OP seems for me anyway the best ball for medium wet/dry THS conditions.  I think what I am looking for is some length and better mid lane read but I don't do well with most pin under layouts but with my weight experiment this may change.

Gary,

Hard to move right into the dry-dry as there is nothing much to start wth unless I use Ogre Urethane which I have done....can be iffy with poly use in first shift at times.  Moving deeper seems to be the best move and open up front angles some.

Hmmmmmm maybe Immortal Pearl but I'm not really a fudge knuckler.  I've tried G-3 16 lb'er too heavy for me at my crusty age.

Just got me to thinking....more considerations.

I think it really depends on what you do though.  I will put a little more speed and less hand in the ball and then as I move even more right, less hand again and more speed as needed.

Also not against a little loft, if that's what it takes to get a little more down the lanes.

Not sure about anyone else but this screams "Ogre Solid, pin up, P2000/P3000 grit matte" to me.

The Ogre solid's cover seems pretty darned aggressive to me. But then I've always liked it. It's killing me that it's sitting idle cause I don't seen enough oil for it anywhere I go.

Scott,

I wonder if Ken really meant increase the Drill angle on your OP. That would kick out the CG towards your PAP, keeping the pin high. This should reduce the backend if you try to get it further out into the dry. Maybe even move the pin until it's actually over the center of the bridge. I've been getting a nice roll of similar balls (even reacting pearls) with such drillings.

I''m using the New Breed solid on THS. Last season it was the Ogre SS. Last week tried the Ogre Urethane sanded to 220 grit Wet/dry paper. Hooked more/earlier than New Breed solid.

Just curious why you would discount the Gladiator pearl? I find it to be more well rounded for THS than the supposedly benchmark AMF Code.

While it may not be as strong as the Ogre pearl I find it stronger than most say it is with an early enough mid lane and just the right amount of backend finish.  I can nearly compare it to my 357 Magnum but not as strong of a turn in the back.

I could suggest something else like the Orange Warlock but considering it's age it may be difficult to obtain.

Basically other than an Ogre Pearl which handle a small amount of carry down as a pearl also rated 8.5 by BTM as a sport condition ball....most other pearls don't handle carry down nor work as well as most solids.

Anthony,

Do you follow mixed leagues with poly in front of you?  What number of players do you bowl in?

Both leagues are trios

Tuesday night league I follow women using poly, heads are in flames and there is enough carry down to prevent the ball from finishing strong and carrying well.  I can't say anything about this league as it's more of a fun one with old friends.  I use either the Orange Warlock or Green Gargoyle, can't really use my Glad pearl it's too strong.  I basically start straighter with weaker equipment, release, and more speed.  Depending on how dry outside the five board is I may put some hand to get the ball to turn.

Thursday league follows some poly use but not as much as Tuesday night.  The shot is a THS with lots of free hook outside, can't get close unless you have a scope attached to your arm cannon.  There is a nice volume of oil on the lanes that deteriorates at a less than standard pace but the last game transition has you guessing if you're not prepared to make good changes.  Here I can use the Glad pearl inside around 30 and move in to 35 with some hand or play softer, straighter, and more speed with the Gargoyle or Orange Warlock.

On Thursday night the GP starts early enough to stay inside the oil line and has just enough finish to take the 10 down.  I more than likely have less RPMS than you do, for me it can handle a fair share of mild carry down.  The evening I shot 837 I was playing deeper than normal and had no issues with traction or carry.

I will get a picture of my GP layout and put it up in case you're interested.

I have tried NBPP three different surfaces for the best usage out of the ball OOB is the best for me.  Not a medium to light-medium condition ball. More a medium to heavy-medium ball.  I don't even take it with me to the house where I bowl two 5 man leagues that follow mixed leagues with poly usage.

My style/technique I imagine plus the house lane condition, add 5 man and very lil oil to outside is fraught with issues. No clear cut answer that covers all users.

In the past use of balls outside like the Scorcher and Orange Warlock on carry down haven't yielded good results. On drier fresh both very good.

Moving inside these two non-Visionary balls carry the best.  Both with more continuation.  Older Visionary balls that would carry well from inside ie. G-3, GG, and Crimson Ex are all 16's too heavy now for this old coot.

I miss my Crimson Executioner I should have never gotten rid of it.

Hey Ken still got that 16lb G3 for sale?

For me the DC carries wonderful from the inside but if there isn't enough oil in the heads it's on fire by the time it comes out of the ball return.  I haven't tinkered enough with the cover but it gets quite a bit of length and has a strong pop, kind of like an upper medium Green Gargoyle and eats carry down for lunch.
