My Warlock DC
« on: April 28, 2011, 01:52:52 AM »
I had to post this to see if anyone else has had similar experience with this ball.  It was last night of league and decided to go to the closet and pull out something I had not thrown in awhile.  The ball I pulled out was the Purple Warlock DC.  Although it was a ball released in 1999, I got one brand new about 2 years ago and maybe only had about 5 games on it.  From what I remembered, it was very rolly.  I had been using my "Pinky" DC Tour the past few weeks the last game because it blended in the over/under really well and could play the 17 out to 12 type line with good success.  The Purple DC had some dust on it so I took it into a pro shop and had them hit it lightly with some Rough Buff just to freshen the surface.  It came out with a nice sheen to it, but not real shiny.

I take it out to the lanes and the first shot in shadow, ball goes about 42 feet and then HUGE hockey stick backend reaction and went brooklyn.  My jaw dropped and my teammates were like "What the hell was that"?  I shrugged my shoulders as I had no idea.  Talk about completely unexpected.  I have it drilled pretty weak just because of the .06+ differential on it.  Pin above the fingers (5.5-5.75) from PAP with the locator pin right next to the thumb.  Even with that layout, I still remembered the ball being rolly.  Just that added Rough Buff, now I have the most backend ball I have ever had.  To give you all an idea, it reminds me of the Victory Road but way more on the backend.  On the right lane, I stuffed 4 nine pins on 6 pitches.  I knew it was too much but it was so much fun to watch a ball go sideways like that I was going to have a blast with it.

I had quite a few people come up to me and ask what that ball was I was using because they were not used to seeing something go that sideways even with someone with my rev rate.  I have had balls go sideways.  But not like this.  When I told them it was a ball released in 1999, their jaws hit the floor.  The main question I got was "How does something that old go that sideways on todays conditions"?  I had a blast throwing the DC the other night.  Shot 680 which I will take considering it was not the best matchup for me and my rev rate.  I sent Jason an email about it and his response was that bowling balls go in circles.  What you drill now may work well, then not work well in 2 years, and then you pull it out 5 years later it works well again.

Has anyone else here had a similar experience where you pull something older out of the closet expected to see a little weaker reaction and instead got a reaction that pretty much ran circles around all the other balls sitting on the ball return?

I'd think it more your high rev rate and ball surface on the lane condition.  How much flare are we talking about here?

As you know Steve I have enjoyed the older stuff that I have drilled late in the season as it was weaker (but still had the hitting power) and more usable on the wet/dry house conditions that I and most see.  I do have to say I like the older VBP equipment more lately than the newer stuff.  But, I also found out that I was not laying them out correctly for myself.  That factors in.

I really have my doubts on why we need the newer hook monsters on most lane conditions other than to say my ball hooks more than yours.
