Looking for: G3 comparison with Trauma/Accu Tread
« on: September 08, 2007, 07:06:05 PM »
Hello,

my trusty Trauma is aging and just caught a crack at the fingers - and I am looking for a potential replacement. My attention came to the G3 Gryphon, since the core has similar specs and my FMG with the same core shows nice and pretty similar characteristics, just on more oil than my Trauma would handle.

My question: has anyone 1st hand experience with both balls? I am especially interested in the G3's coverstock oil handling, compared to Accu Tread pearl and/or React-a-tack from the FMG. I hope the G3's cover is OOB not too strong, so that it can handle medium to medium dry conditions and later games where my Trauma excels, and "above" the FMG at 2.000 grit Abralon finds it use.

My plan is to get a G3 with a 1-2" pin and drill it like my Trauma, to copy its reaction with good length and a booming backend. My specs are in my profile, the Trauma has a strong drilling and I might set the pin a touch further away from PAP on the new ball, e. g. under the ring finger, like my FMG.

FMG drilling: http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4546604

This should IMO work well because of the similar core specs and characteristics. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks a lot in advance!

dizzy, it's the weekend.  You'll probably get some replies during the week since it is usually slow here on the weekends.

Consider this a ttt.

TTT

and thanks a lot so far. Yes, I considered another Trauma, but this is impossible. Stocks aren't that big around here, and even getting a used one is a dire task.

@Andrew: you are 100% correct - trying to copy one ball's reaction, even to another of the same specimen, will probably not work. A fried of mine also has a Trauma, but with a 4" pin, and if you play his and mine ball side by side you would not think that these were basically the same balls. Mine is pretty arcing in the back end, his a true snap ball.

The G3 came to my attention through my FMG, which has a simlar drill to my Trauma and reminds me much of it in overall reaction and versatility. I "blame" this on the symmetrical core which is by specs and even shape close to the multi density Trauma core.

I have seen a G3 in action, but in the hands of a top level amateur with much more speed and revs than me, so it was hard to tell how strong the coverstock is. My hope is that the polished G3 fits "under" a sheen React-A-Tack cover, so that the ball would need less head oil than my FMG and the powerfuld core might allow deep shots "through the middle" with a swing shot once the outside areas run dry. My FMG can handle this, but it is so tacky that I cannot use it effectively on medium to medium-dry shots (and that's also not the niche I use the ball for).
On the other hand, replacing my Trauma will be a hard task, because I like it's reaction so much. I had hoped to replace it with an Awesome Finish, but this ball is way snappier, and now I am thinking about a strong symmetrical pearl like the G3 - the G3 looks like the best offer/option right now for me.

So, if anyone can give some input on Trauma vs. G3 or Accu Pearl vs. the G3's coverstock, please post! Any impression is welcome

dizzy,

Cheapbowlingballs.com had a N.I.B. Trauma last time I checked. It was pricey, but was listed under the discontinued section.

Here is a direct link to the discontinued page.  They have several hard to find balls, and in 15lbs too!.

Thank you, Jug!

Last weekend during a tournament I had the opportunity to talk to the probably single owner of a G3 in Germany and his impressions, and, as a twist of fate maybe, with the Visionary salesperson for Germany who imports the balls, as well as my pro shop owner and trusted ball driller.

I will settle on a G3, even if it might take a while to get one (since they are not in stock around here). Here we go!
