Ogre First Impressions-Update
« on: January 30, 2007, 06:44:00 AM »
First off.....I am a test staff member.  Have been since 2001 I think....have tried many of Visionary offerings going back to Orange Warlock, DC Tour, etc.  Previous to that I have used many Hammer offerings.

My stats. are in my profile.  Tend to a be slightly rev dominant mid speed.  If lanes allow it will play swing.

Got an Ogre with the help of Jason and Betsy shipped last Monday and arrived Wed. punched on last Thursday.  Specs. on 15.4 lb. ball on scale 3" pin 3.15 oz. top weight.  I use Switch Grips therefore like to get minimum 3.0 oz TW balls.

Prefer pin up balls for the most part.  Laid it out pin up over and slightly right of ring. CG kicked out 2" on midgrip line from center to a 45 deg. layout w/ X-hole  3/4" dia. deep to core 1" below my PAP on VAL depth of X-hole deep to core brought it back to 5/8 oz. pos.  These types of layouts usually work for me pretty well.

Left it OOB 600 matte to much surface for what I intended to use it for.  I have other medium heavy balls I would use instead of the Ogre like a FM Gryphon.  Took it to 1000 abralon and also have tried 1000 grey Scotch Brite.

Used it on some practice lanes....very nice even roll no over under and no big huge over reaction on dry backends.  Just a very readable symmetrical roll.

Used it at an over 40 scratch 3-Man tourney Sat. 21 teams of some of the better So. WI. semi-raisins and raisins in Sun Prairie, WI.  On a kind of THS on 2nd generation Bruns. Anvilane with some wear about 6 years old.  I'd guess about 40-42 ft. of oil some hang outside of 5 but not a hard shot by any means.

Went 227, 236, 203, 213 all with Ogre and my team qualified 7th out of 21 teams.  Not bad we eventually would up tieing for 3rd/4th place and getting some $$$.

Since, used it on Sunday on older wood 40 ft oil built up middle THS.  Shot a decent 710 in a doubles tourney.

All and all I'd say so far very even rolling ball with the surface I am using on it.  Shined up it would pop more but I have other balls for that kind of look.  About 3-4" of flare and rolls great on back end very predictable. Reminds me of some of the LM/L balls I have used and kind of like a little more hooking Blue Warlock with a lil more length.  Cover stock seems a lot like a Frankie Maye...about the same strength.  Some of these opinions are based on my technique and how I have the ball laid out.

Ogre will not be some blow your socks off ball but it will be one of the best 1st of the bag THS league balls available today.  Could be used a Visionary's benchmark ball.  Previously for me the Violet Gargoyle would have been my Vis. benchmark ball.

If you are used to playing a B/G Centaur up the track this ball would be a step up for more lane conditioner.  I'd say it could replace a Charcoal Executioner.

Any questions please ask away and I'll try to help.

Scott,

Thanks for the review and nice bowling.

I use the Blue Warlock as my benchmark ball so I will have to look into this one.

Great review here.

Well done!

Personally, I was not happy with the 600 grit really, so I have sanded mine back to 1200 and polished.

A very angular ball -  seems to be very versatile.

Scott,

1. Entirely too rational and reasonable. A benchmark ball. Good!

2. Nice weekend of bowling! Congrats!

3. (edited) was your test finish 1000 grit matte?

I took mine up to 1000 abralon, and it is magic.

Finally found something to replace my Charcoal Executioner

Yes Jeff.  Tried as close as I could get with a worn out grey Scotch-Brite pad basic 1000 grit and a new 1000 abralon.  I couldn't see any difference in comparison.

I like this kind of finish when the lanes are fresh to tame down back end over reaction.

Update!  Tried it last night on a semi-fried THS on older Brunswick Anvilane 1st generation.  Third shift.  Ladies league, then a 4-man work league and then us at 6:45 PM 5-man hdcp.

I took the Ogre to 2000 abralon and then 4000 abralon with a coat of LM/L polish over the top.  First used a Hy-Jinx pin over bridge CG kicked out to 75 deg. layout.  Pearl gets the ball down the lane well but after playing with my release coming around it more w/ more axis rotation I wasn't getting really good carry.  Changed to now shiny Ogre moving back right as carry down was beaucoup.  Heads fried and not very good midlane w/ massive carry down especially on right lane.  Changed my hand position to up the back with more forward roll.......very good match up and great carry for well executed shots.  233...salvaged the series.

When BTM does their review I'll be surprised if the Ogre doesn't get a good sport rating.  Dependent on what they test it on and layout/surface.  My layout is not sport conducive but I am seeing a very predictable roll.

The nay sayers that think this ball is ONLY for medium-heavy......I'd say if you can adjust cover this ball being a solid reactive can be used on many conditions.

Wow, Scott,

4000 grit PLUS polish is pretty extreme from 1000 girt dull.

Nice way to finish off the night -233 on miserable condition.

Solid resins with medium core like the Ogre are fairly versatile; this one seems VERY versatile.

I wish Visionary would publish the mass bias strenght. It would give some idea of how flexible the MB posiitoning can be. Wonder why they don't?

Can you ask Jason next time you talk to him?

THanks again.

Charlest, no MB strength because the Ogre Core is smyetrical not asymetrical.

OK.

I'd still like to know what it is on the Immortals and the regular Centaurs.

Jeff,

I knew going in from past weeks that this lane condition would be difficult at best.  I wanted to try the Ogre at a different surface and knew this would be the best match-up.  The Ogre has nice mid lane reaction and being a solid would carry better than a pearl for me.  Wish I had changed to a different release and moved back to the right earlier in the set.  Dummy!

The Ogre is a very versatile ball.

charlest, my driller spun mine on the determinator. The only thing he said, it flipped real quick. I'm not familiar with the determinator. I know what it looks like and it finds the mass bias. Thought this might be useful for you.

Haven't thrown mine yet. Still waiting.

I thought it odd when TKE625 said it was symmetric. That core usually has some mass bias. EVen the B/G Centaur with almost 0 RG diff has some MB effect.

The "wow" was suprise that you went that far in your testing so soon, NOT that you could go that far. I recently took a pearl down to 2000 and added polish. Its stock was 400 + polish and I wanted more length. Never got it. Testing is the only way we know what we can and can't do with a ball.
