Author Topic: FMG + Secret Sauce = BAD!!! (Read 1607 times)

So, I finally got the nerve to change the cover on my FMG. The 400 grit cover was too strong to use anywhere. I applied a bit of Beans Secret Sauce to the ball and the ball had a nice sheen to it. It wasn't super shiny, but no longer dull.

Well, I took it out to the lanes last night to practice and the sauce totally killed my ball. My FMG went straight for 55 ft. before it turned over and when it turned over, it barely moved. The lanes were med/hvy so the ball should've moved a bit more. Even playing up the boards and getting the ball to the dry, the ball just sat and did not move. Fortunately, the cover of this ball can easily be taken back down, but I've always been reluctant to change my covers and this just reinforces my thoughts and feelings on that. I'll be taking my FMG back down, probably not to the 400, but maybe 800 with no polish.

I'm not saying that the secret sauce is a bad product, but it totally killed my FMG. I also put a little on my Black Widow Pearl and no longer have backend on that ball.

I basically keep all my balls for med/heavy conditions at 1000 abralon both my FMG and Solid Ogre. Then, during practice at tourneys I can scuff them slightly if need be. Works pretty well for me.

mhhh.... strange... I applied the sauce to all the equipment I have and on the right combination of coverstock and condition it did wonders.

It did never "kill" a ball... just pushed the reaction back onti the backend. Well sometimes it made the ball unpredictable.

But on my BCB it also killed some of the reaction but not as you describe it. This ball is drilled for early hook and has little backend so pushing all the reaction onto the backend just made the ball hook less.

Maybe that is the case with your ball, too?

I took the BCB back to 1000 and the Tsunami to 800 to get the old reaction back though

Well, my thoughts for now are that I'm going to try it out on a different lane condition. There might have been some carrydown present last night so the polish would cause the ball to skate through it. I am going to try the ball on a fresh shot and see what happens.

Either way, I'll probably take the cover back down because I already have balls to use on a fresh shot. I'd rather have this ball to use when there's a heavier pattern to play on.

Scotts, if I were to put this ball at 1000 abralon, would it overlap my Immortal Solid too much??

When i tried brunswick high gloss on the FMG it went a mile also, took it back 1000 no polish and have kept it there for the last year and half.

It will overlap with the Immortal solid and the AMB solid since all have the same cover on them, maybe 2k no polish would be a different look for it.

I don't have an Immortal Solid to be able to compare Rock. I see in your profile how you have them both drilled. Do you keep them both in the same surface?

This what TrimMan/Wayne said about the difference comparison on the Solid Ogre and the Immortal Solid. Scott, when you decide to drill one up. Try the pin at 5 3/4 and mb at 45*. plenty of flare still with that drilling.

My Ogre Solid is drilled 5 x 45*.

I used both of these this past weekend on the Viper. Started out with the Ogre, until we pushed some oil down to calm the backends a little, then it was the IS.

I like both of these balls for these lengths of patterns, they compliment each other very well.

My FMG flares more than the Solid Ogre of course and I am not sure if there is a lot of built in difference between the FMG and Immortal Solid. Seem to me to be close in ball reaction. I think there is a bigger difference in ball reaction between the FMG and the Solid Ogre. Just a guess though since I don't have an Immortal Solid but I'd like to drill one and see.

Notice Wayne said this was bowling on Viper pattern which is around 37' and heavier than most PBA patterns.

Well, my Immortal Solid is at oob finish which I believe is 1000 abralon. If I took the FMG to 1000 abralon, they'd be identical in cover so the core would be the determining factor as far as reaction. I'd probably get more length out of the Immortal, but they'd both be able to handle comparable amounts of oil. I suppose if I take the FMG to 1000 abralon and the reaction is too similar, I could just take it down a bit more.

As for my Ogre, it is currently at 2000 abralon and I plan on keeping it there as it is the perfect benchmark piece for me with that finish.

I have an Immortal Solid with Beans Sauce. The ball is very clean through the front and makes a strong but even arc for me. Right now its one of the first balls out of my bag.
