Green Gargoyle vs Ogre SS

Green Gargoyle vs Ogre SS:
Anyone actually compare the two?

This can be hard because most Green Meanies will be quite used.

I'll let you know in a few weeks Jeff.  I ordered an SS this week should ahve it a week or so.  My Greenie is still in very good shape.  Probably going to put a pin over ring and CG in palm 90 deg. layout.

Pin over the ring? Intend to make a flippy ball flippier???
I was thinking of a pin in center of grip and CG/MB out at 45 degrees in thumb positive quadrant.

Ogre SS is quite a bit jumpier off the dry. The Green Garg. is really a better ball on light oil where as the SS can be easily used on med oil. Hope that helps Charlest!!

I have used them both and have identical drillings in them.  I think that the Ogre is a little stronger in overall hook with similar backends.  Both balls are drilled with the pin at about 4 1/2 and the cg stacked with a small weight hole at 4 inches from center grip.  For me, the Greenie was a couple feet longer with a strong backend.  The Ogre for me seems to start up a touch sooner with the same strong backend.

So in your opinion, the Ogre SS is a stronger ball, a 1/2 notch to full notch stronger than the GG and not really a replacement for it, as was predicted?

According to the BTM, the Ogre SS is not as different from the "Blurple" Ogre although it is longer and only slightly snappier. That review surprised me a lot. Right now, I have an undrilled Blurple only because I am using my "pumpkin" polished and have been led to believe they will overlap.

Thanks, Steve. I haven't used a Green Meanie in a long time and got one just when they were discontinued. I had been meaning to try one again for the longest time. Originally mine was so flippy with a 4x4 drill that it was totally uncontrollable for me. Power personified on light oil. I may drill it up for the new season, depending on what I see.

Just drill your SS with longer pin to PAP distance, then you will get a closer reaction to the Green Gargoyle.

Here's how mine is drilled. As a high rev player this is how I get my length from strong pearls.

Yes to recover from inside angles for better carry.  Don't intend to use it as a down and in ball would use B/G Centaur for that type of use.  Weak drills for me don't carry well leave a lot of ringing 10's from deeper inside angles.

90 deg. will put CG in center grip not as weak as 105 deg less strong than a stacked 75 deg.  75 deg. too much 105 not enough for inside angles.

charlest, threw my blurple last night for the first time. I would like to know how you came up with that conclusion.

From the many posts here comparing them.
And I haven't tried it yet because I just haven't yet had time to get to the drillers.

quote:

My Pumpkin is drilled 5 x 45*, pin in the ring with 2 light coats of Brunwick HG over a 500 abralon surface.

My Blurple is 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 pin above ring to the right with a OOB finish.

To me the blurple was 5 boards weaker than the pumpkin and way smoother through the heads. I was actually able to play up the 5 board with this ball before my thumb swelled up and I had to stick it back in the bag. Never been able to do this in this house. I couldn't also believe how smooth it was off the dry. ( If there was drooling smiley I would place it here ).

My "Pumpkin" is so smooth and has so little backend that I'm almost afraid to drill the "Blurple". It has a 4" pin next to the ring finger with a Clean and Sheen polish over the stock 600 grit. It moves pin very well but it is a major control ball on medium and slightly less oil. Surprisingly, the Clean and Sheen finish, roughly a 1200 grit shine, limits its use to medium oil at the most. I tried 2000 grit matte and it was very early too early for the oil I see.

So, right now, while it is a good ball, its use for me, possibly a combination of the drill and the finish is relatively limited, which I do not like. The pin-CG distance of the ball I got was lionger than I got which limited the drills I could use, for the purpose for which I thought I could use it. In any case, when I get some time to play with it, I will try something else. (I do like your idea of rough underlayment and using a non-abrasive polish; it's something I do quite often.

Hmm, matter of a fact I'm going to practice this afternoon; so, I think I'll go downstairs to the spinner and modify the pumpkin right now, 9 AM. 600 grit + Legends or Brunswick polish sounds like a good starting point.

Who do you think I received the idea from?

I have found the Brunswick HG goes on better in lighter coats on Visionary coverstocks. I try not to burn it into the coverstock. Maybe 10 seconds at the most. Let it dry. Wipe it off.

Hoist upon my own petard!

I htought, at the time, that Clean & Sheen over the stock 600 grit would work; it did, but not over a wide range of patterns and surfaces.

Tried the 600 grit Plus Legends polish (it's even more stubborn to apply than Brunswick's and gives more gradations of shine more easily). It worked pretty good on a tough wet/dry today. I did have to use a slightly more rev release than the more "stroker" release towards which that I have been TRYING to migrate. It actually had more of the backend I usually get with higher flaring balls. I'll try it again this coming Wednesday in league, if the lanes have enough oil.
