Ogre Pearl - I am Confused
« on: January 25, 2010, 04:22:44 AM »
Hi Everyone

I am considering getting this ball.   But I read some reviews and they say the ball doesn't hook much.  I read other reviews, and they talk about how strong the ball is for a mid price.

I've viewed the buddies video where the tester seems further right on the lanes so I tend to lean with the slightly weaker talk, but in the video the ball is highly polished.

Any help?

It all depends you your technique and lane condition you roll on.  One persons strong can be another's weak.

For me, I find it a rolly pearl and a good benchmark ball for a pearl.

This how I rate balls that I use on a continual/rotational basis.

Weakest to strongest that I use on most conditions other than heavier oil.  5 balls that I use and can step from one to another without having to think much about it.

Ogre Urethane 4000 abralon spares and light oil
Green/Blue Centaur 4000 abralon light - medium
Ogre Pearl  1500 polished medium
AMB Bronze Centaur 1500 polished but slightly hazed medium with some carry down
Gladiator Solid 2000 abralon medium - heavy

Appreciate the replies so far, but I need comparisons to balls from other companies as I have never thrown visionary before.

I have a lot of hand (I have been told) and a slower ball speed, around 15 on the end of lane speed readers I have bowled on.

My house uses light oil but some of the tournaments I've hit lately seems to have heavier THS shots and my lane masters Hornet is finishing too late to carry consistently, but if I switch to my Avalanche solid, it will roll up too early.

I'm am looking for something in between the 2.

Here is an old video I shot of several Visionary balls B/G Centaur, Ogre SS, Ogre Pearl and Immortal Pearl all shot on the same day on a THS.

Ogre Pearl should be stronger than your Avalanche Solid

My Arsenal:
Rogue Cell (coming soon)

Twisted Fury(5 x 4 500 Abralon + Reacta Shine)

Ironic, as I would have said it is of similar strength, with slightly more bakcend. Both are benchmarks handling medium oil.

I made the mistake of putting the pin under on my OP and it had very little backend. If I were to get another, I'd put the pin over the ring finger and stack the CG below it. The ball is very even reacting and very much a control ball for true medium oil. The higher pin would add a little more backend.

My Avalanche Pearl (Green/Black, PK 18 pearl), with the pin under the center of the bridge (5x4 drilling), had slightly more length and more backend overall than my OP. My AP covers medium-light to medium oil.

Thanks Charlest.

Looks like the ball might be the answer if I select the right drill.

Appreciate the information.

I would agree with that and this is a pic of mine. Note pin above ring...if to do again I'd probably shift the CG out a lil further.  Gets decent length and arcs hard to 1-3.  I am NOT speed dominant.  More rev dominant 17 in heads.

BTW.....on tougher shots where I have to play straight I take my G/B and play down and in not giving away pocket then move to OP after I have opened up the lane a bit and there is a bit of hold build up.

IDK guys,I have my OP 4x2 pin down and it'a a very strong arc with all kinds of backend.I have a SS 3-3/8 stack pin even with ring finger and it's also a backend monster.I've had the best luck playing real deep with these two and the lanes were not torched.I have a hard time classifying amounts of lane oil as every one I bowl with play up the track with the latest and greatest hook monsters and I'll be all by my lonesome deep inside.if you have some hand and good head oil then I would say you should like the O.P. if not love it.

surface on my Ogre's are
O.P.- 4000 A and High polish then lightly scuffed with a very worn 4000 A
O.SS - 4000 A and High Polish
I'm looking forward to trying out my new O.U.

Ha, I wish I knew. High
speed I can range from 15-19
pap 5x0

just a thought but these two have been the only balls with strong lay outs that I''ve had luck with. maybe they are a little weak for most,I don''t know...

Therein is where you make a big difference to the majority of bowlers.  I am not a fluffer by any means but I am in the 300-325 range.  When you go up above 375 and more you can really make a large difference in how you quantify ball strength and reaction especially if your ball speed is medium to low vs. others players.

Therein, lies the issue with txbowler also.

Then, add in your local conditions and if you have a heavy hit on your release and you can't compare apples and apples.

BTW.....most with a stronger layout on an SS will get a heavy snap off the dry/backend.  It can be a great ball but for others hard to control.

I didn't think my ball speed was low.
