Ogre Pearl Impressions
« on: May 23, 2008, 05:36:10 AM »
This sort of goes with the Gladiator impressions I did as the balls are being used as the 1-2 punch for now.....until I get my greedy hands on the Gladiator Pearl.

Ogre Pearl is drilled almost the exact same as the Gladiator Solid, with the pin to the right of the ring (almost at 3PM it) and CG directly below.  Ball is in box finish as well.

As I told Jason, this ball thoroughly impressed the daylights out of me.  I expected great things from the Gladiator....it's the higher end and it should be performing at that level.  But I've gotten a couple more games in with the Pearl and it was a real eye opener.  The performance for the money, to me, beats any of the original Blades when Hammer came out with that series.  I was really taken by surprise with how the ball rolls and how it really complements the Gladiator Solid, though it would probably do the same for any resin ball.

Ball is extremely strong off the break point, but not so angular that you get into trouble.  Ball give me a great look playing the same 15 to 5-7 shot and then as it goes, it still gives me a great look outside with more speed/hand or less speed/hand.  I am not one to move left and try to swing more or keep it tighter to stay in the oil.  I could on big speed changes and hand adjustments.

You can just see this ball rolling....and waiting for the point where it just makes a big more left.  Thus far....a pin mixing machine!! Loves the light hits!!

I do find this going longer than the Gladiator as drilled on the given conditions, but not that much longer.  Break,as mentioned, is strong....but seemingly controlled at the same time.  For my game, it's not a violent reaction to say the least.  But no way an arc.

Now....where is the Gladiator Pearl going to fit in???

In the end, it's going to be Blue Centaur, Gladiator Solid, Gladiator Pearl, Violet Gargoyle, Ogre Pearl and Slate Blue Gargoyle.  I see nothing with that for a nice arsenal!!

For my $$$ this year the Ogre Pearl was The Ball from Visionary.  It is there most impressive ball last and this year.  Especially on league shots you could find a place to roll the ball and carry well from many different angles.

I don't hand out plaudits easily but for me the OP out shines anything I have seen in a long time.

Hence the ability of Natl's AE leader Bryan Young to slow roll an OP on team and do something that many with heavier hooking stuff like Cells could not do.

Scott,

Bryan either sanded his Ogre Pearl or he has one ton of hand. I needed a polished light load particle or a lightly dull solid resin to handle the fresh oil at team. That wasn't light oil. I might have been able to use a 2000 grit Ogre Pearl, but it never occurred to me to even try it.

I have said it many of times now, I feel the Ogre Pearl is one of the most underrated bowling balls out there. I felt it could of made a run at midline ball of the year had more people known about it.

This balls is very smooth through the front part of the lane and has plenty of potential to still hook in the back on almost any condition. I am not sure how Bryan used his during team at Nationals. I attempted to use mine games 2 and 3. I had a decent look, but not a great look by any means.

It was asked how this compares to the Gladiator Pearl. For me the Gladiator Pearl is a few feet longer and a little more angular in the back part of the lane. I would like to say going Glad Solid, Glad Pearl, Ogre Pearl would be a great 1,2,3 punch in anyones bag!

I don't know how Bryan normally bowls...ball speed etc.

This is from a   guy that saw him throw some shots on S & D which I know is totally different than team.

"We bowled 2:30 team event yesterday right after Bryan Young bowled the 11:40 s/d squad, and got to see him throw a few before we went into the locker room...

On 1/2, he was almost slow rolling (15-16 mph) it between 4th and 5th arrow, out to about 7 at the b-p, and he had incredible carry (of course)... and it was like watching the same shot over and over again, there was no "miss" in his game the parts of the first and second games of singles that we got to watch."

I can use mine on more oil than many would think but I don't throw it with beaucoup ball speed so it works for me on a lot of conditions.
