Ogre Solid
« on: November 13, 2009, 01:21:55 AM »
I've got a couple hundred games on my ogre solid and up until this year it's been a great ball for me. But this year so far it just doesn't seem to react like it used too. Some nights are good while others it seems like the ball reacts different for each shot. I've had the ball resurfaced twice since I've had it and I clean it every couple of weeks. Do you think that maybe the ball is finished or should I have it resurfaced again and see if that helps?

I have done the hot water bath 3 times. It seemed to help, but I haven't done it since last season. The center I bowl at has the same conditions and oil for the past couple of years. The surface of the ball right now is at 1500 grit sanded.

Though the center may have the same 'oil' pattern per say, with the changes in the economy and less people bowling, is it possible that perhaps the quality of bowlers has dropped?  Or perhaps even the quality of the balls being used?

A 5 person team that threw all the top of the line reactive balls, assuming they play close to one another, is going to clear up some of that oil.  Perhaps now it's not as much.....or getting pushed around more.  Anything!!

Maybe with the solid there's less head oil this year and the bowlers are chewing it up faster and your ball is losing too much energy.

Do you throw anything else, like a pearl, so you can guage the reaction?  If you threw one and that ball took off strong, then you might see that you've got a different shot than before and that the Solid is too much for the lanes right now.

Just a thought!!

gsback,
I thought about some of things you said and the more I think about it there's a lot of guys this year that have upgraded their equipment and with the different styles these guys have it does make alot of sense that the shot would change a little bit. It doesn't take much for things to change at our house, it is really touchy most of the time. I've tried a pearl for a few games but I haven't stuck to it to much because I've just been so comfortable throwing the solid. I guess I will need to give the pearl some more time and see what happens.
I'll tell ya that for not knowing anything about our house or the shot I play or the bowlers I bowl with your ideas and thoughts were right on.

Thanks for the excellent reply.

Just to add most of the Visionary equipment I have used over the years except one I can think of have NEVER lost their total hook or ability to handle what they were manufactured for.  Visionary equipment is some of the longest lasting in the bowling industry bar none.

Daily care cleaning after bowling with a product like Remedy RX (also approved for use during USBC sanctioned competition except Natl's) will keep your equipment more like new.  Hot water soak is helpful as well as using a product like Clean & Dull.

tank38,

Not a problem!!  I agree with Scott on the equipment statement too....I've never seen a loss in hook like what you’re describing….at least not with Visionary stuff.  A little oil into the cover, sure, you see a small and subtle change, but a water bath of most of my stuff after 2 years of use took care of any issues I had.

Also, I see what you are going through as I bowl in a Youth/Adult league with my son and most everyone uses plastic or house balls with the exception of the people that are bowlers.  Talk about the oil being pushed anywhere and everywhere...amazing!!  The boy that’s on my team has never bowled before so his ball is going everywhere!!  Go from that to a semi competitive mixed league where most are throwing reactive balls though even in that league we have teams that are throwing plastic.

Important to see that, that’s all!!

Let us know what you find out when you get that Pearl use!!
