Soaker Covers
« on: February 16, 2010, 01:07:46 AM »
Was talking to Jason the other day and he mentioned a topic he's got going on Facebook regarding producing a soaker cover.

Looking for thoughts on this place since I don't know who's on Facebook.

My thoughts are around the longevity of the covers.  While I know people say they do preventative maintenance, I still feel that covers that soak oil are going to require (a) more maintenance and (b) will last a lot less.

Other thoughts??

I traded e-mails with Jason yesterday about this also. Not sure but it seems most companies are producing oil soaking covers that require quite a bit of maintenance but most of us now do a spray on type of cleaning after bowling and use products like Clean and Dull for weekly or monthly cleaning on balls like this.

Soaker not meaning the soaker cover DT produced few years back.

Oil soaking covers generally last say 1/4 to 1/2 the life of what Visionary has produced for years.  But then again for the conditions I generally see I don't need the latest/greatest hook monster which is what these type of balls are.  Gladiator Solid is biggest hooker I have needed.  I don't own any of the new heavier oil balls (ie. New Breed Solid, etc.)  Use balls like and FMG or a AMB Part. very rarely.

Walled up house conditions don't allow for much use of heavy oil big hooking balls.  See threads on Storm's Invasion.

I was the first to reply on FB and as stated there I don't think this is a market VBP should pursue.  I do understand if business trends lean that way for profit reasons that's the way it has to be but I won't be purchasing any type of them.

I came full circle for a reason the covers are superb, thick even with filler, resilent, and long lasting.  Ok so in this day and age you may have a ball that lasts two to five years but where I come from quality over takes quantity.

Also I don't purchase equipment to fit in or look cool personally I can give two f*cks less what the other guy is throwing.  I research the conditions I will see for the upcoming season and purchase accordingly.  With that said due to the house condition and shift of the league I'm generally looking for pearl balls or weak solids.

I don't know if I'd stay with VBP if they decided to jump on the bandwagon of super absorbant oil sucking vacuums since they have a niche of their own even if it's not as major as other companies.

Andrew,

Not sure if the approach Jason and company are taking is to replace everything with a soaker cover.  But fact is, and according to their site, the statement of the company has the following:

"Instead of releasing a new ball every month just to have something new, we look at where we have a void in our line.  We then research and do extensive testing to make sure that the new ball performs as desired and is significantly different than the other balls in the line.  We don’t want to have multiple balls that react the same or similar enough that you can’t tell the difference, and as a result we don’t produce a lot of balls each year – but the ones we do create are essential to filling out our product line."

I would think that making a soaker cover and creating a new lineup would be something legitimate and in line with the above.  As we all know, Ebonite did that with much success in the widow and whatever Ebonite balls had similar characteristic.  I would think, though I don't know, that Storm/Roto Grip probably have similar characteristic in the covers of some of the higher end equipment they make.

In the end, there is a market for it.....and that is what business is about.  I know that for me, while I might think about buying one, a new product line wouldn't force me away from them as a whole at all.  I still they make the best stuff on the market....bar none.

I don't see the downside of creating a new line and them featuring the "super" coverstocks. Those of us that are interested or see enough oil will have the option, and those that don't see oil will still have the "normal" line up to chose from. However, I would not want them to start using these coverstocks on all of the new releases and get away from the longevity that we all know to be Visionary.

I agree with MC, I think having one line would be good. It might help get the name out by competing more directly with some of the other big name companies. Everyone refers to mine as "those VBP balls".Get em hooked and reel em in. I would also like a return to more fluorescent colors! :-p

That was my take on this topic just do one line with the super strong covers. Don't fool with the Ogre line!
