Ball selection help
« on: August 29, 2007, 04:47:58 AM »
Hi guys,

I need some help with an arsenal for this season.  I bowl on synthetic lanes that seem to be a bit jumpy this year.  Just looking for something to help me even out that backend.  I have an Immortal Solid.  I was thinking of the FMG.  Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Please put down your stats. if you know 'em or best guesstimate.  What equipment you are using now and what it it doing?  Your best on what lane pattern you are bowling the majority of the time?

We'll try to help.  Write Jason also for his opinion.

These are all rough estimates:

Speed: 15 mph
Rev Rate: 350 rpms

I can play anywhere on the lanes.  right now it looks as if the house I will be bowling at is laying a 35 ft with very crisp backends.  I have been using an HRG and Big Shot for something like this...I was wondering on which ball in the Visionary line would be best.  I have drilled the Immortal Solid and love it.  Was thinking of maybe flipping my arsenal.

I will take a stab at it...Scotts33 would know much more of the balls from Visionary.  I would maybe suggest a Ogre Pearl or FMG with a 45 degree drilling (use a longer pin out).

I'll take a stab at this.  FWIW.....I think of 35' as a shorter pattern ie.PBA Cheetah.  Do the outsides play drier like Cheetah?  How do you normally play this pattern?

If it is like a Cheetah pattern two ways you can attack this pattern IMO.  Take a ball like the Solid Ogre with a low differential keep the ball scuffed say 1000 matte and put a 105 layout to mellow out the reaction off the spot/corner.  I used a Vis. Violet with a 105 on a pattern like this and did very well with it....I did heep the Violet in OOB surface though.  The 105 will mellow out the ball reaction so scuffing may not be needed.  You might use 1500 or 2000.

OR take a look at twisters post here and watch the video.  http://www.ballreviews.com/Forum/Replies.asp?TopicID=170482&ForumID=15&CategoryID=2 Compare his stats. to yours.  See how he drilled his SS Ogre a bit weaker.  This was on a modified Cheetah.

Either way IMO you have to find a ball that you can control the back end with....let us know what you decide.  Ask Jason also.....he has good wisdom.

BTW....you say your IS is a bit jumpy off the spot.  What surface is it and how is it laid out?
