Visionary?
« on: June 18, 2008, 10:37:53 AM »
Ok, I just got back from ABQ and the USBC open and while I was out there I stopped into the Visionary booth to check out this company that I knew very little about. I have been a fairly devout Storm guy for the past few years but I am always open to something that could give me a better look than what I have right now and after talking to Frankie May for a few minutes I am thinking about giving Visionary a try. Any feedback about the Visionary equipment that anyone could offer me would be great, but I am especially interested in the quality of the coverstocks i.e. do they last more than 50 games unlike the Ebonite P.O.S I bought. Thanks.

i currently own 2 Visionary pills-an Ogre Pearl and a Slate Blue Gargoyle. i cannot say enough about these two-they perform exactly how they should, and then some.

The Ogre Pearl is hands down the truest reading ball i have ever thrown. it utterly dominates any sort of medium oil, and can handle a bit of carrydown. it has plenty of pop in the back, but is so ridiculously easy to control. this is most definitely my benchmark, and the power at the pins is crazy.

The Slate Blue is a pearlized urethane cover with the Gargoyle core. but man, oh man, on dry lanes, this ball is lights out. nothing flippy here at all-just a smooth arc in the back. even on scorched lanes, it shows no signs of wanting to flip. and it ignores the heads like nothing. also, becuase of how much energy it stores, it hits harder than anything else i have.

as far as cover longevity, both of these rocks have been exceptional. no signs of death whatsoever, and the Ogre Pearl especially gets a lot of usage. i have had zero problems with the covers. they are a very high quality product.

i would most definitely try Visionary. if you have any questions on ball selection, myself and many others will be willing to help. let us know what you do and good luck.

I have the OGRE/OGRE PEARL and the FRANKIE MAY .. love all of them .. If I didn't have so many bowling balls I Know I would use all three of the VISIONARY more often. Can't take it away from them .. VIS makes great balls!

Ive got to have at least 300 games on my AMB centaur(approx 12 games a week throughout the fall and winter leagues) and I can see no sign of performance loss. There is no tracking on the ball at all. I have a a couple other balls(which I love so they will remain nameless) that have maybe 10-20 games on them with a track starting to show up, no loss in hook but I hate having a scratched up pearl ball. VBP rules, I would say try a Gladiator solid for an awesome experiance. Ball has an awesome midlane with a good backend and a great hit.

I've got some of their new stuff (I finally did the test staff this year), but lemme tell you about all the "retired" Visionary equipment...and I mean retired by the company, not me!

I still currently use my Green and Granite Gargoyles that I've been throwing for like 4 years at least. The ONLY thing I can say about a Visionary cover, is that the Granite is high-maintinence cover. Still as strong as new, but must clean it frequently. I would imagine that the AMB Particle is the same (as are most High Load Particle solids). I would HIGHLY suggest getting your hands on a Frankie May Gryphon while you can, as that is an AWESOME ball!

PS...another thing I did just think about, is that their 2 clear balls tracked fast, but so did the Clear Grenade from Roto-Grip, the Clear Skull, Clear Werewolf, Clear Wolf, and Snuffy from Ebonite...and every other clear Polyester I've EVER thrown!

Visionary has some very durable coverstocks.  I have a Blue Warlock that I still pull out and use on occasion.  That was one of the first Visionary balls that I purchased in 2001 and it still hooks good and the coverstock looks to be in great shape although it has been on the ballspinner many times to adjust the surface.

If you really have any questions on any of their balls, you can call Visionary and talk to someone who will be more than willing to help answer your questions.

I have 2 Visionary balls, too, a FMG and SBG. Both are very reliable and durable. The SBG, hard as it is, has not seen any surface refreshment need since I got it 2 years ago despite frequent use, and the FMG is very durable, too. I keep it at 2.000 Abralon, and the ball does not track out easily. Very simple and versatile piece, at 400 grit OOB surely too much for THS unless you have zero revs. For me, it is an excellent and strong (stronger than I expected) ball for medium to medium-oily shots. It gives a very good feedback from the lane, recats well to hand adjustments and the coverstock is easily tuneable, with recognizable reaction changes to surface tuning. A fine piece, as well as the SBG for dry lanes (a shame that it was discontinued!), and I'd love to try a Gladiator Pearl if I could get my hand on one...

I'm still using Visionary balls produced in the late 90's.  Shot my high series last season with a Scorcher NPT and a high series in a bone yard where no one scores with an Orange Warlock.

You can't beat 'em IMO.

I have owned 8 Visionary balls, you can not match the durability of
Visionary. They roll the same at 200 games as the 1st time you roll them.
Truly a great product and Jason and Betsy can't be beat on service and just
plain being really great people.

I just shot my high game this past year using a Charcoal Executioner which was introduced in late 2001.  These balls really hold up.

Only drawback is that if you are looking to buy them used you may not be able to find many.

Another topic Jason and I talked about when I met him.....coverstocks!!

I am a fan of thicker shells for longevity of a ball.  That's one of the reasons I loved all the Faball stuff......thicker shells with little to no filler.

Now...while some of the Vis stuff does have filler, the coverstock thickness is nowhere near as thin as Ebonite/Hammer stuff.  And I've had at least 3-5 balls from Ebonite crack in the finger area.....actually maybe more.

I like the Visionary covers and see no reason to not expect them withstand many games of bowling!

Thanks for the feedback guys, I think that I will give the SS Ogre or the Ogre Pearl a try.

I would DEFINATELY suggest an Ogre Pearl (just from all the praise I hear, compared to the SS how it is very situational). I am planning on picking an Ogre Pearl up soon FWIW...

I usually don't have much good to say on Ballreviews anymore, but I must say Visionary has the most durable covers in the business, IMO
