Opinions on the Scorcher NPT
« on: February 26, 2014, 12:22:57 AM »
I'm looking for current opinions on the Scorcher NPT.  A lot of reviews say it's very squirty in oil.  Also, I know it has a different core than the Midnight.  Honestly, it sounds like more of a medium (or less) ball than heavy-med. heavy.  If anyone out there has an opinion based on modern conditions, I'd love to hear them.

I had one for a short amount of time and got rid of it.  The ball has so much of a urethane type roll and reaction that when I threw it on fresh oil, the ball just did not seem to want to read the lane and roll on the backend.  The coverstock for me was hard to figure out.  Tried a couple different surfaces and just could not match up with it.  Definitely not a med-heavy ball; especially with todays oils.

The cover stock on this ball was hard and polished. I believe it was a low load of particle based on a faball reactive formula.  I may be wrong, but I remember this ball being allerigic to oil for a high end ball.  A very short pattern or outside angles on a shot with a lot of friction outside would make this ball shine.

Ask away I know all about older VBP stuff.  I shot a 300 with an NPT and used one quite a bit so I have some very opinionated ideas on what it will work on.

This is the one I shot a 300 with......

I guess the most logical place to start would be to ask what you think about the core and cover strength.  Tame, aggressive, medium?  People describe the motion as urethane-like.  Would you agree, or does it definitely have a reactive shape to it?

Cover compared modern equipment would be weak.  On shortish-medium length wet/dry conditions I played in the dry with some speed allowing it's high flaring core to become devastating at the pocket.  For a weaker ball in today's game it's high flaring core will carry better than any other weak ball I have ever used.  It has it's niche for those kind of conditions.

I've talked with Jason about this ball as I got one from Spike that he sent down for my son to use.  The best way Jason described it was that it hooked the same amount in oil as it did in dry.  But you are talking about someone with some revs on the ball.

I watch my son throw it and I think I can categorize it as unforgiving.  It's not an oil ball.  Decent on medium to light, yes.  But you have to be consistent otherwise it's not going to react at all the same.  Other might be more forgiving...this isn't.

This was one of Visionary's rare turkeys. A gargoyle core with an oil allergic shell. Very over under and unforgiving. I think its a poor choice on any condition. Of course a great bowler will score with anything.

Why does everyone laugh when I bowl?
