decision time
« on: March 18, 2007, 02:08:38 AM »
thinking i am going to punch a visionary ball up while at reno this year
the team event seems to be a little heavier this year so considering one of these three balls as a purchase while there

Frankie May Gryphon
The Ogre
or the AMB solid

pros and cons of each?

Higher speed player with 450+ revs, pap is over 5 up 0

what do you visionary guys think, I have never thrown one, sell a fair amount of them but have never punched one for myself, I want to get a feel for what they can or cannot do

Out of the 3 FMG is probably the most proven med-heavy to heavy ball....you'll get more flare with the FMG.  Ogre is new winner less flare.  Of course dependent on how you layout and conditions bowled on. Between the AMB Solid and the FMG I'd atke the FMG.  Both the FMG and Ogre are more arc type balls....it's built into them more than the AMB Solid at least for me.

One thing you already know you can punch up and try a lot of Visionary balls at less cost than Lane #1.  Just as versatile with less cost with a better cover except for the old Lane #1's that had PK18.  Visionary covers last a long time.  Only other cover that has as much longevity made today is LM/L.......IMO.

I believe the Ogre line is going to fill the Gargoyle line easily.

With your rev rate trigger your layouts will have to match up.....but you know that.

Good luck!

yeah i use a lot of pin over bridge, pin over middle finger layouts on all my stuff, the ogre impresses me due to the lower flare potentional, while the AMB solid is longer, getting the ball to turn is not so much an issue, it is making sure it has something left when it does that i need to fill

I have an old teal saw that covers that archy movement, and my pink cherry c/2 is the master of backend (notice both are pk18) my tsunami is one great med to med light ball.  but none are predictible on a heavier shot, the cherry can handle it but is real easy to shoot past the break.

Then, think about the Ogre or AMB Solid.  I think you answered you own questions.

trigg,

If you like homely covers Vis. is the way to go.  Solid Ogre a pumpkin.  Amulet Glow....wow is it loud.  The ole DC - Tour Edition Vis. has used many pinkish covers all the way back to the Pink Hammer compare it to this newer pinkish-magenta covers in recent times.

Trigger,

I think you will be better off with a Frankie May.  The reason I say that is because you have a high rev rate.  The Gryphon II core is probably the most continuous out all the balls they've had in their line.

The AMB Solid I think is not going to give you the recovery potential that you WILL have with the Frankie May.  Although the OGRE is the hot ball, I believe you'll find yourself with a little more versatility because of the higher flare potential that the Frankie May Gryphon will offer up.

Worst case scenario is you let Frankie decide.  My guess is that he's going to put his ball in your hand.  I've seen High-Rev players throw the Frankie and they definitely are able to open the lanes up when most people cannot.

Take the cover to 2000 and you should be good to go.  Best of luck and let us know your choice.

The FMG is a cool ball, and surely a strong and conservative choice. I'd rate it very high as a tournament piece. Put a "tame" drilling on it, maybe get the surface grit higher, and you will have a strong piece for a wide range of conditions from medium to medium-oily, that responds well to release changes and gives a very good feedback from the lane.

I am looking at a pin above bridge type drilling, that is 5" pin to pap for me, with cg in the 4-4.5 range with a surface adjustment

    thoughts?

5 1/4 with a Virtual Mass Bias (VMB is the point 6 3/4 from the pin straight through the CG) just right of your thumb.  Surface should be at 2000 maybe 4000.  Best of Luck.

Triggerman,   Love my Ogre, drilled pin under ring, 4 1/2 from PAP(also 5 over 1 up) and cg kicked right, and small dia weight hole 2 inches down from PAP on VAL. Like throwing it so much I haven't been throwing my NoMercy combo that I think is the best look I have had in a long time. My surface is at 500, but with my higher speed dominate vs my 300 rev, this works great on the oil line edge. Ball still has great clean look through heads and still backends for a ball at this surface. All of this aside, when you get to the Nationals and see Frankie May at the Visionary booth, I know he will suggest a strong layout on the Immortal solid for you. I've got a buddy who throws plastic on all the local house shots that has slower speed and a lot of revs. He went two weeks ago, asked Frankie, punched him up a leverage pin Immortal solid with cg out and a weight hole down. He wishes that he would have taken the cover down to 500, couldn't get the movement he would have liked, but when he got to the head pin it blew the racks. He also shot well with it at the 40 framer. Loves the ball. Said they were slick this year. He normally swings the lane or plays deep inside line, but played a small belly to ten and in this year at Nationals. Had a pin up Vapor that normally works on deep tight shot, that wouldn't wrinkle, so used the Immortal up the outside. Hope this helps, I go in April, plan on taking Ogre, Special Agent, Big Block Diesel. Al

    trigg,

I have a FM drilled 4 1/2 stacked with a small weight hole and it is a beast on heavier patterns.  IF you want something for longer or heavier patterns, drilling the ball for length is not the way to go.  Dont leverage it, but find a "happy medium".  I have a 540 rev rate and 5 1/2 PAP.  The FM takes to cover changes extremely well.  Use that to help get the desired length.  The ball will take care of the rest.  Best of luck my friend and let us know how everything works out for you.  ALSO....setting the pin at 4 1/2 will give you more overall hook for those longer/heavier patterns with plenty left for backend and more control ability.  Best of both worlds.  Frankie himself will call this the rev and flip drill.
