councilator.....

a big nathan panaligan fan?  not to take anything away from panaligan, but how come you usually end up rooting for your favorite bowler in these finals?  do you flame out in the qualifying rounds?  perhaps lack of carry?  those who made the finals are all excellent bowlers, especially sherman and blanchard, whose names we have seen as the leaders of these various tourneys this year.  i know you made it into the nationals, and shot an amazing 4 game series, but come on now, you're a better bowler than that to sit down and be rooting for these finalists.  try bowling in one of these finals instead of cheering.  step it up!

ps props to blanchard and dutcher for shooting bills

hey ryan, did they change the shot back to sport once they started the match play? cause if not, then he didnt shot it on sport. the 2nd day shot was not a sport shot. and from what others said it was their house shot even though it was used in the world championship. just wondering since i didnt make.

let me know. and blanchard is a real full of himself dude.

the house shot is so much easier than that first of all... and second... it was the same shot as the last 6 of qual... but... it was the same basic pattern just a lil less oil and a lil shorter... Definitely not a house shot though

its funny how some people have the courage to post about a great bowler for bowling  great and saying that he has a big head, but at least he has game to back up his big head.  come on ryan, don't you bowl out of buena?  you bowled good at the firecracker last year, too bad you couldn't bowl well enough to participate in the final 5.  look, you don't like the guy, thats one thing, but when you have to comment about the dudes game, you must be envious about something.

council, i was not there this weekend. i was thinking of showing up sunday to watch but changed my mind when i found out that the tournament directors decided to change the shot after all the minus scores were thrown on saturday. that makes it two years in a row that the shot has been changed on the second day. it almost seems like it's becoming a habit. only a few bowlers do well the first day and it's time to change the shot to something quite a bit easier. i can see this being alright for the lower aged divison but you older guys should be able to handle a "sport-like" condition from the start of the tournament to the end of the tournament. so council, i have a question for you, if you don't know the answer it would be cool if you could find out, what was the directors reasoning for changing the shot? was it parents complaining that their child wasn't doing well? was it parents or bowlers threatening not to participate next year? was it to level out the playing field so not only a hand full of bowlers could shoot decent scores? or was it to help out a few choice individuals? the tournament was advertised as using a "sport" or "sport-like" pattern, was it not? it just doesn't make sense to me why the directors feel the need to change the oiling pattern in the middle of the tournament. and even if the second shot they put out was not their typical house shot, any graph that comes up like a christmas tree is not anywhere close to a "sport-like" shot. i give a lot of credit to the directors for putting in the time and effort to run this tournament that gives junior bowlers the chance to earn scholarship money.  it's sad to see though that these junior tournaments are getting almost as political as adult tournaments. it would be nice if tournament directors could learn that they cannot please everyone all the time.

i think art and diane did a fantastic job as they have done every year thus far in the tournaments existence... the changing of the shot... i was not even that happy about especially in the middle of qualifying... at the least it should have been waited until matchplay... but even then... i think it might have been to level off the playing field but i do not know for sure because i have not gotten a chance to personally talk to them... personally what i would like to see next year is 3 different shots for qualifying.. just like at GOLD... that would be a great preparation... but who knows... there is a year until the next tournament... this year went well... i thought it was more fun bowling on the sport condition... i stayed around even for it and that made me happy enough... i am not sure if i agree with openning up the shot a bit... but thats how it went and im not gonna sit around and complain about it... its overwith... human gutterball.. if you werent even at the tournament, where do you have room to say anything? at least ryan was there and he bowled, and admitted he bowled bad... its funny when people bash others but coudlnt even man up to bowl it themselves.... i just see this as a change that can be made for next year... and hopefully to help the tournament grow... all openning the shot did was help some of the guys that were minus get to plus and the guys that were pretty much doing well when it was harder just excelled further... josh being +1450 after matchplay is no fluke... he had the shot the whole weekend while it was sport like and while it was a little more open... big deal if it was changed... maybe like i said, next year there can be different patterns advertised for all of qualifying or something... who knows... if i hear enough input on it i will personally talk to art and diane myself... they are close personal friends of mine and if i hear good suggestions i will pass them on gladly... but i dont agree with callin out ryan on the fact that he didnt make cut... mark french didnt make cut and hes on team usa, brian leseberg didnt make cut and his parents are the directors... just as examples... but guess wut its NOT a BIG DEAL... and its no reason to bash on anyone cuz they miss cut at a tournament... all of those guys are some of my best friends and i am not going to sit here and watch a couple guys bash on ryan... there is no reason for it... just want to say congrats again to all the top 5 finishers and everyone who bowled for that matter, thank you for supporting the tournament and hope to see a lot of you next year... i might be bowling it but i might not if i go adult obviously, regardless i will be there helping because i think its a great tournament... hopefully participation can reach over the 100 mark for next year... anyone who bowled should tell people about it and maybe have it be even bigger than we imagined... like i said before serious suggestions to help the tournament grow and help it be anymore fun than it already is please let me know... because the directors and many others do take their time out for all of us... they dont do it for themselves they do it because they care about us juniors, and that is very respectable

I have some things to say. First off, about the shots that were put out, and everything...Yeah, I did not like how the changed the shots in the middle of qualifying. I heard some reasons why, I dont know how true they are, but if they are, it doesnt matter, cause most juniors want to bowl on the harder stuff anyways. Now with the "sport shot" that was out. If it was considered a "sport shot", then it was definitely a really easy one. Now you may look at my scores that I bowled on the hard shot, and say that my scores sure dont show that they were that easy for a "sport shot", but I got my reasons for that, which I am not going to explain, because if I do, I am sure some or many people will just call them excuses, so no point. Now when they made them easier for the final block of qualifying, if you look at all the scoring it seemed that either someone was hitting it or not. And I mean that by the extreme, cause it seriously seemed like it was either 240s or higher shot, or a 150. For me, I played the easier shot the same as the harder shot, just had a little more area. Now you can bash this all you want, but one thing that you got to agree on is...

...how great this tournament was. I dont know if the Leseberg's or anyone who helped run this tournament will see this, but it was one of the greatest tournaments I have ever bowled. I told them there how awesome of a tournament that it was. Its unbelievable to think that so many people put so much time into it. I mean they had to of for everything that was going on. How many tournaments do you know that has 90+ sponsors? How many tournaments do you know that gives out (I think they said, might be more) $13,000 in scholarships to just 87 bowlers? Yeah, it was a great tournament, I am glad I bowled it. It still was a great tune up for Gold, and I will return to bowl it next year. I recommend this tournament to everyone, and I think it should be a new "major" junior bowling tournament.

Now I just want to congratulate everyone, and say good job to everyone. Congrats to Nathan and Alysse for winning, and also who ever won the lower division, haha. Good job to everyone who placed or cashed, or just bowled good. Also a big congrats to Spanky for being lead by like 3795428457857843754 pins. This was the most fun I have ever had in a tournament in a long time. Cant believe I wrote all this, but see you all in Indy. Peace...

Hello,
Congrats to the Firecracker promoters on an excellent event.

Regarding the lane condition stuff: those of you that bowled the JBT's AZ Invite (Blanchard, etc...) know we had a lane issue as well: The first 5 games of qualifying were supposed to be 'sport-type', the second five were supposed to be house.  Well, the 'sport-type' played waaaay too easy.  It was hard to tell people that that wasn't house until the house shot was out and scores went up even more.  I took quite a bit of heat for that, and there wasn't much I could do about it.  There was certainly no 'changing of the shot' on my end, and the head mechanic insists to this day that 'that's their sport shot' (on an old 5-pad machine with a bad stripper that still left the house shot memory under the 'sport' pattern, thus the problem, etc...)

So, perhaps the Firecracker directors didn't directly alter the shot, or at least there's something more to it than that.  There's sooooooo many variables that go into determining how tough a shot plays, it's almost shooting yourself in the foot to announce a specific lane condition.  Obviously I wasn't there, I'm just saying that there may have been more (or less) going on that it seemed.  Like Brian said, any event with 90 sponsors obviously is working hard to put on a good event and hopefully wouldn't make mid-tournament changes for no reason.  That said, unless the rules are written otherwise it's totally the director's call to do that if for some reason they felt it was right...

One of the JWTC guys who runs events in Washington told me he NEVER pre-announces the lane conditions, instead telling people 'be ready for anything'.  He still asks his centers to mix up differemt patterns, but that way if a 'sport' pattern doesn't play very hard, etc., you don't end up with egg on your face.  So maybe we'll try that for next year... mix up the shots through the year, but just don't pre-announce which events are sport and which are house.  Any thoughts from the bowlers on that?

I'd also like to mention that JBT SW regrets the date overlap of Firecracker with our TPC.  Since we cover so much ground, we have to plan our schedule waaay in advance.  When this season started, our So Cal Conference was pretty small and almost completely a San Diego thing, so Firecracker wasn't even on our radar screens.  It is now, heh heh.  TPC, by the way, was very cool, and also awarded a boatload of money to a limited field ($10,500 to just 67 bowlers).  We've already penciled in the weekend of July 24-25 for TPC next year, so mark your calendars (and no moving other tournaments around, that's ours dangit!).  We hope to DOUBLE the TPC prize fund for next year as well.  With Firecracker, our events, and a few others, we can create a really big-time circuit of great events in the summer in the southwest...

Thanks,
Jeff, JBT SW

Hi,

Hmm, well that IS a bit different... I'll butt out since I wasn't there, all I wanted to mention is that trying to control lane conditions from center to center is a nightmare at best, from a director's end...

Thanks
Jeff
