How do u get out of a slump?
« on: August 13, 2004, 04:59:44 AM »
I have been in a slump for the past two years.I shot my  300s about 2 and a half years ago they were a month apart..I also shot my first 800 series for an 821. I made all the cuts in the tourneys.. It was nothing for me to finish top 5. Now, I Cant seem to find any comfort.. I can barely go plus anymore. I've been battling with my game for a while. There was a point in time where I couldnt do anything wrong.....now i cant do anything right..So my questions are, has anyone else gone through this and how did u get ur game back?

I have had a rough time this year also. In February I started my drought and barely  did good in the local leagues and tourneys.  My averaged suffered terribly.

Then i got out of my slump around June just by bowling more and tending to the basics. Shortly after that starting early July I badly sprained my knee and i've been out of bowling ever since, I feel that i'm able to start bowling again and can't wait to get out and practice some. But i have to take it slow considering the fact that my knee is still a little bit week, but that might help me keep my speed up to the foul line down a bit.

All i can say is take it slow, and work with the basics that's how i got out of my slump and now i'm going to be in another one so hopefully i can get out of this one before the winter leagues start up.

Good luck getting out of that slump!

I've been in a terrible slump since May 2003. This past winter, my average was down 11 pins and this summer 19 pins. Ever since I went into my slump, I've not only gotten worse, but picked up and memorized in my brain, more bad habits than you can count. I am still in that slump right now, but may be starting to climb out. Time will tell. I think the problem may have been that my grip, span, and pitches changed. I Have been working with King Of The Mill and LuckyLefty on my grip, span, and pitches and after making the latest changes today and trying the changes, I may be on the verge of beginning to pull out of my slump. Time will tell. Check back with me in 30 days or so.

Sorry to disagree with you Jimmy, but you are wrong as there is nothing that can't be fixed. Been there-done that. I'll pull out of this slump also. Watch and see.

Slumps from what i have seen usually start off as mental and then become physical. You lack a bit of self-confidence, and then doubt creeps in. there bad habits show up when you try to over compensate.
usually bad habits are caused more often in bowling by over compensating for me anyways. from muscling the ball, to late timing.

for me it was actually watching myself bowling that i really wanted to change how i thought i looked before i had seen myself and how i thought i was bowling in my own mind.

Check out some of the pros on tour and look not at there rev rate but there push away and arm swing, and even timing. Eric Forkel is probably the best example i have seen of picture perfect timing, him along with David Ozio.

Im in the same boat. Ever since the summer of 2003, I started to suck majorly. I think once the 2004 fall season starts, I will be better than before, Ive been working quite hard.

Depot, I agree with you. It appears at this point that my one little hitch has been my ball fit. Making a change in the wrong direction and then another trying to straighten that one out and then another etc.etc. plus reading too much into all of the tips what others do, and etc. is what I believe started me on my down slide.

I went through the same thing 2 years ago.  My average had progressively slipped over a year or so.  I got a coach and gave myself a year to work the average back up.  My coach said the problem was I had let a few bad habits creep into my game.  The bad habits interfered with my physical game, which eventually took down the mental game.  Bowling was just not fun.

The season after coaching, my average was back up to where it had been and is still on the rise.  I check back with my coach regularly and have received coaching tips from Ron Clifton and others on this site.  I have not been in a slump since.  There have been bad games and isolated bad nights, but that is as far as it has gone.  The main thing is bowling is fun again.

I do the exact opposite of practicing and working on my game when I come into a slump- I dont bowl. Ill usually take awhile off and forget it all, and then eventually go back to practicing and start at 1.

Paul,

Get a coach.  Someone you know, someone you trust.  Ask them if they'll watch you and pick you apart a little bit.  It's so frustrating and damn near impossible to try to fix your own game because you can't see anything.  Someone who is knowledgeable and is into helping you improve can take you a long way.  Good luck man.

When I go into a slump I go back to using a very weak ball. For me that is a Blue Hot Flame,  A barrage or slayer would work also.  Go back to basic fundamentals.  Using a weaker ball will amplify your mistakes on the lane making them more noticeable on the lane and at the pins.  Make sure your technique is letting the ball work.  Thinking let the ball do the work always helps me when I struggle. Don't force anything or muscle up on your swing.  Todays new balls give you so much area that in the long run you relax on accuracy.  Use the weak ball to practice for accuracy.  Also you should still be able to get to the pocket with a weaker ball if you have good fundamentals and a strong release, don't worry about carry.  Give this a try, your problem may become very obvious.  Once you have achieved accuracy and consistency stay with it until you develop muscle memory.  Good luck to you

Paul i would suggest just listening to one coach and not asking around everywhere for help cause that will kill you if you have all these peoples thoughts in your head.  Best remedy for me when i was in slumps was to just take a week off, then all my bad habits would go away and i would be back to my true form.

paul,

My advise is just get back to the basics. I go into 5 games of one steps and go from there. i dont try to hit up on the ball, i just want a desent feel. then slowly work back into your game. i have been in a slump for 2 months now, since JWTC. and I have taken a little time off, evaluated my goals, looked at my strengths and went from there. im pulling out of it finally and i have my drive to bowl back again. it will all work out  take care.

To answer your question, yes, JimmyT is that miserable all the time...oh, that wasnt your question? Sorry. I agree 100% to just take some time off. What I usually do is stop for a few weeks, then go to the lanes and throw the ball, thats it, literally just try to get it down the lane, thats it. Then from there, since Im not thinking about it, thats my natural swing, I look at what I need to change to fix it, then I fix it. Bowl a few more games to get back into the swing of things, and usually Im a bit better.
