It bugs alot of us Cali bowlers because we all take one shot and walk away, but every year in national tournaments, everyone outside of Cali always throws at whatever they leave, which is kind of not fair because you dont get as many shots in, does everyone else do that in all their leagues and tournaments???

what are the rules?

In my area it's standard practice to shoot a 2nd ball if you leave something standing.
-
Our machines don't recycle so after they are knocked down doesn't matter what you shoot at, they are not there! In the past I had wished they recycled but after hearing this maybe we should just leave well enough alone.
-
Round here, we dont practice with pins. Usually get 5-10 minutes and then the pins come down. Dont think I would like practicing with them. Seems like more of a hassle waiting for the racks to cycle and etc..
-
Where I live, it varies from house to house on whether it is 1 shot or 2 shots.
-
Yeah, it does seem that most of us from Cali do throw just one shot and go on, and most from other regions do not. And it is annoying, but who really cares?

Up here in the north in some of the better scoring leagues, if anything is left standing after the first ball, trip the foul light and full rack comes back up. 1 shot, everyone gets full rack, everyone gets happy time.

One league I bowled on, it was one and done. Another league in a different house, it was pick up whatever you left. So it varies by house/league I guess.
-
Around here we take two shots.

our leagues shoot at pins in practice and also re-rack the pins.
So we all shoot a 2nd ball at our spares. I've been in leagues
where you shadow bowl and we would just throw 1 ball since we
didn't have to wait for the pinsetter to operate.

Hey guys,
Guess what? Tradition rules!
If the league or the area has 1 ball per turn, fine. Someone tell the ne wguy and he/she has to live with it.
If the tradition is 2 lane courtesy, then it's two lane courtesy, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR OPINION IS!
If it's 2 ball's per turn or 1 ball then throw th espare, then just have the decency to tell the new guy.
Here in NJ, you throw one ball and either foul (to reset it) or the next guy will tell you "don't foul; I'd like to shoot at a spare." With two 5-man teams and 5 minutes of practice, sometimes we're lucky to get 2 balls per lane in practice. Some houses, some leagues do give you 10 minutes of practice, but that is very rare, from what I have seen.

Our league also allows two shots in practice, which doesn't really bother me but what does bug me are those few guys who will throw a shot and then RE RACK for the second shot! Come on, get with it...how can you let the next guy stand there and watch you reset the machine!?
-
I guess I don't really understand how everyone gets more shots in by only throwing one. Then again, if you want more STRIKE shots, I understand. Maybe this is the reason that you guys from Cali can strike as if there's no tomorrow. Personally, I normally throw two shots unless I strike or leave something stupid like a 1-2-4.
The way I look at it is, I'm trying to get as many shots in that have a purpose as possible in any given practice session. If that means that I'm a donater, then so be it.

Whether you get pins or not sometimes depends on what make of pinsetters/spotters are used in the house.
AMF machines can be set for shadow bowling, after a practice shot the machine doesn't activate until the alloted time is up for practice (usually 5-10 minutes)- but many proprietors don't use the system anymore because the balls crashing into the back cushion break the welds on the pit frames. On Brunswick, the A-2 type at least, this is not possible.
We get an alloted amount of time for practice before league (we have A-2's)regardless of how many balls you throw on each lane.

Nope, not rude; it's considered belonging to civilization.

if i feel like taking 2 shots i do, and if i only feel like 1, i take 1... i'll give 2 lane courtesy if its a rulemy job is not to make the other teams/bowlers comfortable... my job is to beat them... of course all that applies really only in tourneyson the other hand, if its a recreational league, then since im just there to have fun anyway, i'll go ahead with all the normal things they do there...
Well, THAT is ALL I WAS SAYING IN THE FIRST PLACE!

In Cali we are just used to it. I think it makes alot of since because you are practicing for strikes not spares so why do you need to shoot at a spare that you aren't supposed to leave. In Vegas in bugged me, but if you are going to let that one little thing get to you then you need to work on something else. L8. Nice post Jared you are getting alot of responses. See you on Sunday.

no, that's considered being a sheep and following along with what everyone else wants so as not to 'disturb' the old way of doing things... maybe not rude, but presumptuous to say the least...
Then take it a tiny step further. YOu take all the balls in practice and attack or kill everyone who tries to practice. Same difference. you do whatever you want and to hell with anyone else in the world. How old are you 11 or 12?

Our house gives 15 minutes of practice. Lucky us

You guys are mentioning RULES .. I don't think you are referring to LEAGUE RULES .. I've never seen a LEAGUE RULE that covers PRACTICE BALLS .. I guess the reference is to HOUSE RULES ..

Qustion for he Cali bowlers. You ever miss a spare? I always throw 2 balls. We bowl practice for 10 minutes in our leagues everyone throws 2 if they want too. In tourneys yeah it is usually one and done. To each his own doesn't bug me one way or the other. Trivial matter in the long run.
Good Luck, cooksey

Exactly Evan and Council, spares ball do the same thing no matter what unless the shot is FRIED beyond belief. All ya need is maybe 2 spare shots, 7 pin and 10 pin, all other spares you should know how to shoot them. In practice your looking for a strike line, in most tournaments these days its all about who can strike the most, spares do win but rarely, its usually the first one to 250 wins

In Canada, its standard that you take whatever shot you want...if you want to shoot a strike shot and dont strike, then you practice your 10 or 7 pin sparing...most people want to get into their comfort zone on the lanes..
no wonder why canadian bowlers have a better spare percentage than amaricans(not trying to flame anyone)

If everyone throws one shot then lets the next person go, it helps even out the time between each person's warm-up shots. It seems to create a more consistent rhythm - especially in mixed leagues. This is half of what practice is for - to warm your body up and get going.
Finding a line/shot to play is also important. Again, the even pace of each person throwing a single shot seems to allow you to throw an equal number of shots on both lanes. This always helps pick out any inconsistencies between the two lanes between scoring begins.
Just my two pennies.

I live in good ol' PA. Well, here, you can take 2 shots in league, but in tournaments, unless you screw up and get 1 pin, you probably shouldn't take another shot unless it's a head pin or something that you can help to figure out the reaction with. Not saying you just can't shoot any other spare, but if you're in a tournament you probably shouldn't have to practice your spares (unless you're one of the people who buys one reactive/particle ball and tries to use that as a spare ball, but that's your fault...)
But some people are right. "To each his own."
Cali bowlers, if you feel someone is wasting time, just politely ask if they mind not taking the second shot. If they say "Screw you" and give you the finger, then feel free to take any course of action you wish.
And you won't have to worry about me, I'm not going to Cali anytime soon.

i know the people who went to junior gold and TRUST ME...they arent our top notch!
i believe the best collegiate team in the states is Wichita univ., and about 5 of the bowlers on that team come from calgary and montreal(in other words, CANADIANS)
speaking internationally, where was US in the common wealth games?, cause i know we were in second and malaysia was 1st..what about the world cup? keri from ontario took the title.....oh, and how about this...what ever happend to the TOURNAMENT OF AMERICA(junior)??? 1 canadian(chris, my fellow bowler), and 5 americans in the finals...he was at the bottom of the step ladder and averaged 240 in the finals, winning the tournament....
ANYHOW, im not here to battle about which country is better, all im saying is that there is nothing wrong with taking 2 shots on practice.....you have the right to shoot a frame when your up there...if you choose to shoot one shot, then so be it...there's nothing wrong with that..
i'll see all you guys at jbt in vegas in august, cause im pretty sure i wont see any of you in GUAM or GUATEMALA for the international team challenge
there was an article in the bowlers journal acouple of editions ago and it has the world stats. that's where i got my info from.

Canada vs. America. One shot versus two shots. Does any of this actually matter? Go practice.
