Your opinions/thoughts wanted...
« on: November 15, 2005, 12:50:49 PM »
I've been thinking about possible tournament formats that would challenge young bowlers, and would really appreciate the input.  5 years ago I participated in a small tournament, you may/may not have heard of it, the San Diego Junior All Star tournament.  It was over the course of I think 3 or 4 days, 24 games of qualifying and 30 games of match play.  We're thinking of holding a tournament similar to this except we may do 20 games of qualifying (over the course of one day), then depending on the number of entries, cutting the field in half.  Then 10 games of match play the following day followed by step ladder.  It'll be a scholarship tournament probably at the beginning of Spring Break.  We're still trying to iron out the details and the specifics.  This idea came up because tournaments of this type are few and far between for jr bowlers today, we would like to truly challenge their endurance and ability to adjust to the changing conditions of the lanes over a longer period of time.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

From the 808 state...

i think 20 games qual in one day might be a little ridiculous... but i am not against it at all i just think in general people might turn that away because that is a lot of games honestly.... maybe go 24 games qual over 2 days and the third day go like 16 games matchplay and then modified roll off or go 24 games qual... cut to top 16 and have it be pba format from there... thats what we need a tourney that has the pba format.. i think that would be great... have best of 7 game matches... the thought of it is awesome... probably have less qualifying and based off entires cut to top 16 or 32 like in teh pba and go best of 7 game matches until the round of 4 and make those one game match roll offs or something.... of course not only in the span of two days... but over 3 would be perfect i think... i think that would be a fun tournament to bowl... and hey why not make it on a pba pattern while doing that... a pba style or "Replica" tournament for the juniors... that would be a winner in my book

Hello,

Good idea.

Along the same lines, we will begin running the Desert Open event that many of you go to, and this year we will be using the current PBA National Format, all in two days:

14 games qualifying
top 32 advance to best 4 out of 7 matchplay
rounds of 4 and 2 are one game (like on TV)

HOW ABOUT THAT?!?!

The Desert Open will be July 29-30 in the Phoenix area.

Comments, more info?  wwww.jbtsw.com, or jbtsouthwest@aol.

Thanks,
Jeff

Wow Jeff you listened about a real PBA format...haha...might actually have to put the Desert Open into consideration now...Of course that would then probably be my last junior tourney, we will see...

20 games of qualifying in one day??????? Bring it on.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. If you know you're area codes, I'm located in Hawaii, therefore, we're planning on holding the tournament in this state.  We're planning on holding the tournament probably at the beginning of spring break to ensure that if anyone out of state participates that they'll have the rest of the week to themselves and enjoy Hawaii.  But I'm getting ahead of myself.  20 games is alot, but we've brainstormed this format for the older junior bowlers who wish to be truly challenged.  Roughly speaking, we're hoping for at least 20 bowlers, and we'll probably award $1000 to 1st place, and divy up the rest to 2nd and 3rd place (or more depending on the tournament attendance).  If there's anyother advice or comments, feel free to reply.

On a side note: My brothers and I have bowled in JBT events (though not many due to distance issues) but we really enjoyed those events, and commend everyone in the JBT circuit on a job well done, especially Jeff and the other guys in charge of the southwest region!!  You guys rock!

Thanks!

We are familiar with the USBC rules.  Besides, nothing is set in stone as of yet, so we've given ourselves enough buffer time to smooth out the details.  Compliance is key.

Anyone else want to share comments/concerns/enthusiasm to participate, feel free to reply.

Thanks.

why cant the desert open be the next week or the week before or something... that is the same week as the hawaii tournament that goes on at aiea.... just a thought butits about 8 months in advance... why not try to mix up the schedule so more people can bowl... because i know of a bunch of people that went to hawaii last year that would have bowled desert open and probably would next year too if its NOT on the same week as the hawaii tourney... just a thought

Howdy,

Mason, Ron's right, that's the reason.

Your summer calendar:

July 1-2: Firecracker, California
July 8-15: Junior Gold, Florida
July 22-23: TPC, Arizona ($2,000 for first on a $50 entry fee...)
July 29-30: Desert Open, Arizona, or Hawaii Tourney, Hawaii
August 4-7: Vegas National Open, Las Vegas

...unfortunately, there's only so many weekends.  We think we offer some attractive options.  I'll be thrilled to go to Hawaii if someone wants to run Desert Open, lol!!!

Thanks,
Jeff

For those that are 22. They can bowl till the end of their summer league, if they bowl a summer league at that time. Meaning they can bowl juniors still till about Sept. or whenever their league ends.

Brian,

This has been a huge deal out here in the desert (I think people get overheated).  To update you...

While I agree with you that should be the case, for an individual tournament it isn't.  John Sudbeck's birthday is August 1.  Two years ago Desert Open was July 31-August 1.  Even though he was in a summer league, and could bowl that through its mid-August ending date, he was ineligible to bowl Desert Open, even though he was 'legal' the day it started, or JBT's Vegas Open (mid August) for that matter.

Obviously John wasn't too happy about this, but his appeals were declined all the way up to nationals.

To me a season starts with fall leagues, but evidently nationals sees it differently.  Arrgghh....

Thanks,
Jeff
