bowling ball rack
« on: February 14, 2008, 10:39:30 AM »
I'm trying to organize the bowling balls that i have and not just leave them stacked on top of each other.I was thinking about building my own ball rack and was curious has anyone out there done this. If so what were the dimensions that you use?
 anyone insight would be appreciated.

I built one, though I can't cite the dimensions exactly.  What I did was use some scrap plywood and 2x4's.  Three slabs of plywood, about 4' tall, and 6 2x4's, each about 6' long.  Trim the 2/4's, at a 45 degree angle on one side.  Cut matching holes in each piece of plywood.  Put 2x4's thru holes and secure with blocks under each, screwed into both the plywod and 2x4.  Holds 18 balls.

Got myself a rather cheap IKEA book shelf (in silver/maple) that blends into my kitchen, where I store all my equipment (since it is the only room with concrete floor, the rest is wood). Rack is about 6-7' tall, has 7 levels. It holds 3-4 balls per shelf on cup holders (PVC water drain end caps, cheap stuff but effective), is sturdy and even looks nice in the living area.

Used 2x10's and made a simpleshelf unit. 2 2x10's for sides and nailed 2x10's in between for shelves. I use pet food dishes from the dollar store on the shelves to hold the balls. Nothing fancy but does the job.

Pet food dishes are good idea. Metal or plastic?

Rag's sounds like a winner, but, if you're cheap, don't want to do any work, go to Lowes, Home Depot, Wal Mart, K Mart, ask them for the wooden displays that the flower bulbs came in. I was getting 3 a week from my Wal Mart. Made everything from kids bookshelves, toy storage, outdoor garden junk storage and yes, ball racks.

The ones I got were 1X4's with 2X4 bottom frames. 4 shelves, cross frames on the sides and back, holds so many toys, books, and 20 balls per rack. You will need something like a pick up to haul them in but the Wal Wart I got mine from were throwing out 2 to 3 a day for 6 weeks so getting them was easy.

Just passing on info, Good Luck.

I tend to over-engineer at times
I made the two upright ends out of 2x8s, and the horizontal stringers out of 2x6s. I used a drum sander on the end of the drill to make "dimples" (at an angle) so the balls cannot roll around on the rack. I made the first two racks to hold 15 balls (3 shelves, 5 each), and the last one holds 21 (3 shelves, 7 each). They are not fancy, but they will last forever.

I made mine out of 1x4's. Outside dimensions are 30x24x10 Big enough to hold 9 balls but small enough to fit in most closets. I used quality pine and was making and selling these for $50. Havent made any in a while though.

Dizzy - I have a few plastic but the rest are metal. I like the pet food dishes cause the top has a nice radius to it. I also use one when I'm cleaning the ball cause the the ball rotates real easy in it. I got the idea for this from somebody on this forum but don't remember who.

Obviously there are many types of materials and many ways to build one.

Figure around 9-10" per ball on the sides, and around 12" in height.  Figure out where you are going to put it and how much space you have.  Also, if you have children, figure out how to secure it so that it doesn't tip over.

Qstick777,
I like that double wide design, probably more stable.  Using the dowel rods as runners looks like a pretty good idea.  You should probably move that inside though.
