light weight performance
« on: November 11, 2008, 04:41:57 AM »
Looking for some help from the experts. My girlfriend throws a 12 lb raging inferno that is a few years old. She has slower speed, lower revs. Ball rolls up too soon and quits leaving a lot of flat 10s. Now I realize she is never going to carry very well using 12 lbs (heavier is not an option) - but I want to get something that will at least "pop" a little better. She bowls at 2 places, one an old wood house with light oil, another synthetic with medium-heavy house shot. Talked to my very knowledgable pro-shop guy who said that Brunswick is the best bet for light ball performace due to core specs. Looking for past experiences/suggestions for a new ball or two for her.

Thanks for your time...

On edit - she is also a girl, and wants something "pretty". So far she likes the Cell Pearl or Rapid Fire Solid.

after watching a guy on my team, I'd say stay away from low-end hammers.

I have to disagree with Spider Man, the Vibe series are all great balls and have great hit for the price.

My suggestions: any of the Vibes, Psycho, Avalanche Pearl/Solid, Rapid Fire Pearl/Solid, Perfect Rival, Villain

My Arsenal:
Twisted Fury
Raw Hammer Pain
Blue Vibe

pretty sure lane one has 12 pounders for the buzzbomb line.

you may want to check out the avalanches, or maybe roto grips Shield line.

Well, if you want the same core that's in 14-16lbs in a 12lb ball, I think Storm uses the unique cores from 12-16lbs in their Premier and Master lines (Shifts and Dimensions). I think Hank Boomershine mentioned the same thing about the Cell core in the seminar video on their site, also.

Some nice choices have already been mentioned. I don't know if she'd find a Break Pearl "pretty," but I like the way mine looks

Thanks for the responses, everyone.
Just for clarification - not necessarily looking for low-end lightweight pieces, specifically looking for light weight balls that perform as well as or at least similiar to the heavier ones. Price is not a factor.
Thanks again!!

My wife is a featherweight and can't throw anything heavier than a 10 pounder.  I picked her up two balls off e-bay, one for heavy oil (Teal Pro Zone) and one for lighter oil (Columbia Jekyll).  Both carry fairly well for marshmalllows.  The Zone arcs because of its very aggressive coverstock, but the Jekyll really pops when it hits the dry.

With low speed and revs, make sure that the ball has not a very low RG, and particle as well as a sheen or matte surface might also not be the best choices, since the ball bleeds energy easily - and that's the least thing she needs to have some power left for a decenmt back end reaction and a good impact which is more than just a dead roll.

Second the Swarm recommendation. Additionally, the Street Rods from Storm are IMHO also valid options, esp. the pearl version. Visionary's Ogres are also good choices, e. g. the Pearl. Ebonite's older SR300 or RXS300 are also good "girl" balls due to their design.

I second the Street Rod suggestion. Drill both for my wife and daughter and they perform just like their heavier brothers and hit as hard as any 12 pound ball can.

You just need to seek out the medium/light condition balls.  Just about any brand will work great, however don't be surprise if they are way stronger than the Ranging Inferno on your typical condition.  Skip the high end, you lose a lot of the benifit going to the lighter ball.  I'm guessing she would benifit more from having an experienced bowler other than you work on her with adjustments.  From my experiences, Women tend to take things their boyfriend/husbands say as critical and hold it against you, and more readily accept 3rd party teaching.  A couple of good lessons might be needed since a new ball may overreact and frustrate her if she struggles with adjusting.  (I can't tell you how many people I've seen hate a ball and struggle d/t wrong conditions and failure to adjust)

Some great responses, thanks everyone.
I'm torn between getting her a Rapid Fire Solid or a Swarm. Bit of a longshot here, but has anyone seen either thrown in a light weight?
Thanks again.

I just drilled Sandra up an 11 pound Psycho.  Wow it looks great!  It's got a little more pop on it than I expected.  She loves it.

Our shop has drilled several 12 lb. Swarms for women who love it. Sometimes we need to hit the surface with a white scotch brite to get rid of the "gloss" but so far, so good.

Lane #1 uses the same shape cores in their lighter weight balls as well as making them with higher densities. This makes them roll better and hit harder than traditional light weight balls. i'd recommend the new Chainsaw. It goes longer for drier lanes with great hitting power and is a sexy looking ball.

For more hook, and a real eye catcher, go with the Agent Orange. =:^D
